I have wanted to watch Utena for the longest time, but I'm not very big on streaming stuff, and that's the only way I'd be able to do it, and I'm watching Gurren Lagann at the moment (it is the second most ridiculous anime EVER). I also have wanted to watch Nadesico for ages, too.

Also, before I say anything else - A:tLA is good, no doubt, but I'm like you - when people try to tell me I "have" to watch something and/or try to force it on me, I dig my heels in and am all NOPE. So I totally feel you there :)

I saw that post on tumblr, and I think it was you that I reblogged it from. It's got me thinking about things as I play through Final Fantasy XII for the millionth time (not that I've really written them down, because I'm not Japanese, and I'm bound to get some interpretations wrong). Also it's made me think about digging out my book about understanding Japanese culture (that book is the shit, although I can't remember its title right now scratch that, it's called A Japanese Mirror).

And yeah - if you want an example that magical girl shows aren't made for girls/women, look no further than Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha - there's cringeworthy sexualising of an nine year old in that. Added to which, the main character and her family first appeared in an ecchi game which...yeah...

Also I always watch subs over dubs because I'm picky about voices, and until really recently, dubs of Japanese stuff was absolutely shit, because I think the western industry honestly didn't care - the same can be said of video game dubs, too.
