Weirdly, I think that Star Wars, for me, is often appealing because it's like having lots and lots of shows at the same time. There's always something different coming out. A different comic series set in a different era, or a new novel chronicling the main characters or a novel about original characters or a new computer game. It's so huge there's always something new. And I don't think I could manage to read/play EVERYTHING for that franchise if I had a bajillion years and nothing else to do!
And I suppose it's also comforting to have a franchise that will almost certainly never face cancellation.
I know exactly what you mean about eventually wanting something new, but with Star Wars (while - as you can tell - it's not my exclusive fandom), there's so much inherent variety with all their ongoing products that that staves off the boredom mostly.
I'm...nervous about this TV show though. I fear it will piss all over continuity and be as poorly written as the prequels. So I'm just happily pretending it doesn't exist until 2010 or whenever it's due when I'll...reappraise my state of denial...
