I think perhaps I'm so confounded by it simply because the notion was no big deal in the UK. I mean, sure, for a few fringe groups but the press coverage was really low key. I know that religion in general is a much, much smaller social issue there though, and yeah, I know about the religious right in the states. I guess it's just a bit of a visceral shock considering its a place I'm used to thinking of as fairly liberal.
