*facesmash* & a meme.
...my external HD just died. The one that everything lived on. Yeah, yeah, I know, everyone says, back it up four times, etc., etc., but my harddrive ain't huge and I ain't rich enough for two large external HDs so now I've lost...pretty much everything including stuff I know for a fact I'll never get back cus it's been taken offline. Bye bye most of my epic vids collection. I just...seriously. I would like to catch a break at some point, you know? FML.
Therefore in a fit of self-pity I have signed up for the fanvid love meme. I feel a bit like a sheepish whore, but, um, here's my thread:

Damn.

I have a new one (that I can't afford) now, because I really need extra storage space, but now I'm like...looking at it like it's made of glass.
As to retrieving through tech...probably not. Even if it can be done, I just can't afford it - the HD is frakked so I'd have to get it physically repaired and especially since I just bought the new one cus I need extra space...finances ain't gonna stretch that far. *sigh* Though it's probably for the best since there's stuff on there that's not, um, 100% legal...

I already left you a comment in the meme before I new about evil HD crashage. I'm so sorry. But maybe take it to a data retrieval place? It costs hundreds of dollars but maybe? Not a regular tech, though because they can be stupid. Is hope completely lost?

I don't think I can fix it though basically cus of the cost - I had to shell out for a new one; there's no point pretending like I can afford to try and save the old data too. :(

Things should not break! And not so unexpectedly. It's hard to trust even new things after they've broken on you before. Even though my computer is fixed I swear I e-mail so many things now just so they are out in the world should a loss occur. I've grown quite paranoid about it. :-(

Stupid universe indeed. :(

Honestly I think it's all gone; the cost to fix it even if possible, would be prohibitive. :( Given time I can probably reassemble most of it, but a lot of the older vids I liked from older fandoms like Farscape are probably lost causes. *sigh*

I sorta stupidly did a system restore and it wiped out all my vid clips a while ago but at least those I can recreate. Sigh. Some folks must have copies of your stuff they can share? Hopefully?

Fortunately at least my stuff is mostly safe - it's all on my website anyway and I fortunately happened to have it on my internal HD at the time so I'm good on that front. It's mostly other people's stuff I'm pissed about losing. *sigh*

Thanks, but the one bright side is that my vids were actually on my internal HD as well as my external (though nearly nothing else was), plus they're all on my website. So I'm all right on that front, but...dammit, I lost everything ELSE. Which still sucks. ALACK. :(
Thanks for the sympathy and the offer in any case.

As to the drive, I've already decided to take advantage of the fact it's almost Christmas to demand a new one cus, really, I can't function without the extra storage and you're right, they don't actually cost that much these days. But I opted for another 500GB portable because if I go for 1TB, not only is there a price jump significant enough that at the moment my NO MONEY EVEN FOR CHRISTMAS problem rears its head and also, you can only get those in 3.5" rather than 2.5" size last time I checked which means I don't think you can run them from the USB plug; they need an independent power source. I am, however, dead paranoid about all my stuff in case this one dies toooo. It's so tempting to shell out $10 a month for a 50 instead of 2GB Ubuntu Cloud Storage account (s'like dropbox but integrated with my Ubuntu setup; I <3 Ubuntu). But there's that doggone money problem again. Maybe in six months when I (HOPE I) will be more stable.
(Also a plus on the money side is the government decided Kev was sick enough to put him in the Official List of Sick People or whatever instead of the List of Sick People we Haven't Prodded and Been Mean To Yet, and thus he now gets an extra £25 a week from the government on top of what he was getting before. It's not huge or anything, but it's a significant boost to our situation. So, not everything about money sucks right now.)

I would never doubt it. <#
