*facesmash* & a meme.

...my external HD just died. The one that everything lived on. Yeah, yeah, I know, everyone says, back it up four times, etc., etc., but my harddrive ain't huge and I ain't rich enough for two large external HDs so now I've lost...pretty much everything including stuff I know for a fact I'll never get back cus it's been taken offline. Bye bye most of my epic vids collection. I just...seriously. I would like to catch a break at some point, you know? FML.

Therefore in a fit of self-pity I have signed up for the fanvid love meme. I feel a bit like a sheepish whore, but, um, here's my thread:

ARGH. That is ridiculously awful and I am so, so sorry. External HD's can be evil, fickle things, as mine has proved to me before. No chance of revering the data through tech? It's what I've had to do before.

Damn.

[identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW! >:(

I have a new one (that I can't afford) now, because I really need extra storage space, but now I'm like...looking at it like it's made of glass.

As to retrieving through tech...probably not. Even if it can be done, I just can't afford it - the HD is frakked so I'd have to get it physically repaired and especially since I just bought the new one cus I need extra space...finances ain't gonna stretch that far. *sigh* Though it's probably for the best since there's stuff on there that's not, um, 100% legal...

Oh noes! It's like an information loss epidemic out there. So many people are losing everything! I think I was about to ask for a second external HD for Christmas or something. But hell, one shouldn't need three back ups!

I already left you a comment in the meme before I new about evil HD crashage. I'm so sorry. But maybe take it to a data retrieval place? It costs hundreds of dollars but maybe? Not a regular tech, though because they can be stupid. Is hope completely lost?

[identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I know! And yes, we shouldn't need fifty million backups. Things SHOULDN'T BREAK. Especially not without warning. It was working, I went out, I came home, it was broken. :(

I don't think I can fix it though basically cus of the cost - I had to shell out for a new one; there's no point pretending like I can afford to try and save the old data too. :(

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm very sorry. But save that HD! As long as no one wipes it or anything there is hope. You have years of data on there. Maybe someday you can afford to have someone try to retrieve what was lost.

Things should not break! And not so unexpectedly. It's hard to trust even new things after they've broken on you before. Even though my computer is fixed I swear I e-mail so many things now just so they are out in the world should a loss occur. I've grown quite paranoid about it. :-(

OH NOES. That...really sucks. Vids! :( I'm really sorry. I also really think it's about time for you to catch a break. Stupid universe. *many virtual hugs*

[identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW!! I mean, I'm lucky in that I at least had my vids on my actual HD not the external one, but EVERYONE ELSE'S! *criez* I know that a lot of them will still be online, but too many of them will be gone forever. Vids I've had for like...seven years some of them, that will be looong disappeared. Half my Farscape vids for one thing.

Stupid universe indeed. :(

[identity profile] sabaceanbabe.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
ACK! That's awful! *clings*

[identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW! :( Thanks.

[identity profile] asta77.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
NOOOOOOO!!! ARGH. That's not fair! :( I know so little about these things. Is there someplace you could take it to to see if the data can be retrieved? I could run it by some of our IT guys to see if they have any suggestions. I just don't wanty to believe all is lost! ::hugs::

[identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
HORRIBLY UNJUST, UNIVERSE! *shakes fist*

Honestly I think it's all gone; the cost to fix it even if possible, would be prohibitive. :( Given time I can probably reassemble most of it, but a lot of the older vids I liked from older fandoms like Farscape are probably lost causes. *sigh*

[identity profile] callmeonetrack.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
OH DEAR. I AM SO SORRY. :(

I sorta stupidly did a system restore and it wiped out all my vid clips a while ago but at least those I can recreate. Sigh. Some folks must have copies of your stuff they can share? Hopefully?

[identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. :(

Fortunately at least my stuff is mostly safe - it's all on my website anyway and I fortunately happened to have it on my internal HD at the time so I'm good on that front. It's mostly other people's stuff I'm pissed about losing. *sigh*

[identity profile] gonzo21.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. *hugs*

Ugh indeed. :( *hugs*

OH GOD. *hugs and hugs so much* I hate this, and I hate that it happened to you. Since my own compy crashed, the only thing of yours I have is Moon vs. Sun, which you probably don't need because it's still online, but... let me know in case?

[identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
HORRIBLY CRASHING EVIL MACHINES! WE NEVER SHOULD HAVE GIVEN THEM SENTIENCE! *criez*

Thanks, but the one bright side is that my vids were actually on my internal HD as well as my external (though nearly nothing else was), plus they're all on my website. So I'm all right on that front, but...dammit, I lost everything ELSE. Which still sucks. ALACK. :(

Thanks for the sympathy and the offer in any case.

BOOOOOOOOOOO D:! if you can remember vids you want back I'll bet the internet can help you find them. I know you have like NO MONEY but take some comfort in the fact that when you have a little money you can get a shiny new humongous drive for cheap (it's like US$125 for 1TB now).

I'm not doing the love meme but I LOVE YOU MORE.

[identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com 2009-12-04 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW ARGH! I will be able to get a fair number of the vids I want back from the internet, yes. Actually with time I will probably be able to reconstruct 85% of what I lost, but some of the vids are probably gone forever because they're so old at this point, I know for a fact that their owners have removed them from the internets, or their websites have lapsed into obsolesence. :(

As to the drive, I've already decided to take advantage of the fact it's almost Christmas to demand a new one cus, really, I can't function without the extra storage and you're right, they don't actually cost that much these days. But I opted for another 500GB portable because if I go for 1TB, not only is there a price jump significant enough that at the moment my NO MONEY EVEN FOR CHRISTMAS problem rears its head and also, you can only get those in 3.5" rather than 2.5" size last time I checked which means I don't think you can run them from the USB plug; they need an independent power source. I am, however, dead paranoid about all my stuff in case this one dies toooo. It's so tempting to shell out $10 a month for a 50 instead of 2GB Ubuntu Cloud Storage account (s'like dropbox but integrated with my Ubuntu setup; I <3 Ubuntu). But there's that doggone money problem again. Maybe in six months when I (HOPE I) will be more stable.

(Also a plus on the money side is the government decided Kev was sick enough to put him in the Official List of Sick People or whatever instead of the List of Sick People we Haven't Prodded and Been Mean To Yet, and thus he now gets an extra £25 a week from the government on top of what he was getting before. It's not huge or anything, but it's a significant boost to our situation. So, not everything about money sucks right now.)

I'm not doing the love meme but I LOVE YOU MORE.

I would never doubt it. <#
