1: 68 Wives by [livejournal.com profile] hmpf is so lovely. It's a Highlander piece of fan fiction, but please don't be put off if you know nothing about Highlander, because I know nothing about Highlander and it doesn't matter. It's a story about Methos, who rarely appeared in the show, and is the oldest of the surviving immortals. He's been around for 5,000 years and in that time he's been a monster and a hero. He once mentioned that he'd been married 68 times. [livejournal.com profile] hmpf provides each wife with a sentence, starting with the most recent girlfriend who died before he had the chance to marry her, and working backwards towards the very first. It's short, it requires no entry level of knowledge beyond what I just wrote, and it's very much worth it. I don't like using words like, "haunting," and "lyrical" because cliche has cheapened their meaning; but I would, if their meanings hadn't been so diluted.

2. While I was looking for pictures for my SW post (below), I might have gotten distracted indulging my horribly schoolgirl crush and stumbled across an awesome picture of Chiwetel Ejiofor. I figured I'd tack it on to the end of that post, but then I thought, no, there are too many pictures and he would get lost in them and he is a very, very pretty man.

Plus this way, hopefully [livejournal.com profile] hmpf will notice that I recced her and also notice the picspam and be reminded that SHE STILL HASN'T TOLD ME OF THIS MYTHICAL FILM THAT FEATURES CHIWETEL EJIOFOR AND JOHN SIMM!

This being said distracting pic, btw. OMG.

Photobucket
This one I'm sure I've posted before at some point, but look, he's in a suit.

Photobucket
Hey baby, you YOU doin'?

Photobucket
GUH so earnest!

Photobucket
Damn he looks good in those clothes. GET OUT OF THE FRAME, DON CHEADLE!

Photobucket
Okay, I concede, not the greatest picture of him. But it's set in the SEVENTIES. That instantly makes it a keeper.

There really ought to be more pictures of him. *sigh*

Oh, yes, I remember those things! They were on TV! Back when I didn't have a TV! I think... Thanks for finding that link!

Hmm. I must locate and watch this. Possibly I shall wait until I again see [livejournal.com profile] hmpf, because when we are not watching Farscape, there are so few programmes we can both squee at at the same time.

Rephrase: there are many programmes we can both squee to at the same time, such as when watching Life on Mars and she can squee over John Simm and I can squee over the fact that Gene Hunt is the God of Children and Annie is really Sam's Coma. But we can so rarely both squee about attractive people while watching the same program.

And neither do you, really. It's not really surprising that our rare squee objects don't intersect often. ;-)

I think I could get behind the Chiwetel Ejiofor squee, btw. That first pic in particular is smoking hot. *g*

Also: thanks for the rec!

Oooh! Thanks, I'd forgotten about that!

I'm not sure how much I'll like that show - and for the record, and my sense of self-worth, I definitely don't FANCY Gene Hunt! - but I definitely wanted to check it out so thanks for the reminder.

I'm horribly out-of-date TV wise. I pay so little attention...
From: [identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com
And neither do you, really.

True. I'm not sure why. I'll quite frequently think, "Oooh, rather pretty," and go out of my way to watch someone on the screen - like, say, Leoben from BSG. But it's rare that it'll carry over to actually going out of my way to find pictures/watch other stuff they're in, etc. I think the last person (pre-Mr. Ejiofor) to reach that status was Ben Browder?

I think I could get behind the Chiwetel Ejiofor squee, btw. That first pic in particular is smoking hot. *g*

YAY! And I KNOW. That first picture just kills me ded. Also the one where I think he looks all earnest - close-up on face, side-profile is gorgeous. I'm glad you can see what I see in him, most of my other friends don't (well okay, the, like, three I've chatted to), or think he's all right, but don't understand my position that he is teh-hottest-man-evar-except-my-husband-who-I-love-dearly-of-course. ;)

I think a lot of it is also his physical presence which is hard to get across in pictures, but that first one really captures? Because I'll often think that pictures of him just...that they just don't show him well enough, but when he's on screen (even though his career lately seems to comprise standing behind Denzel Washington and getting far too few close-ups) he's just awesome. For a while I thought it was his accent too. Because we know the effect Ben Browder's British accent had on me, and I first saw him in Serenity and never really noticed how HOT he was until, maybe, the second time I saw it? When a switch just flipped in my head and ZOMG; I was forever lost. And a lot of that was his presence and voice (because while he's still SMOKING, he's not as hot in Serenity as he is elsewhere). And then he was British again in Children of Man. But then in Inside Man and American Gangster he had an American accent and yup. Still a damn sexy voice. So I guess my love for his voice is regionless.

...and I'll stop babbling like a schoolgirl now. See? This is why I don't often post picspams (aside from the pain of having to upload the pictures) or gush even on the rare occasions I do have a crush on someone. It's just embarassing and so. not. me. *headdesk*

Also: thanks for the rec!

You're welcome! :D

I don't usually find Chiwetel Ejiofor attractive in still photos, although that first one in your picspam is a definite exception mmm, but I find him extraordinarily compelling on screen and it doesn't seem to make much difference what sort of role he's in because he can be compelling while portraying almost any type of personality.

Thank you for the picspam. ♥

I know exactly what you mean! Or rather, I usually do find him attractive in stills, see: schoolgirl crush, but as I in one of the comments above, often my response is that still pictures just don't look good enough; they don't accurately reflect the way he is and the raw charisma and sexiness he exudes on screen. It doesn't help that there also aren't that many pictures of him, relatively speaking. You're the first person I've heard who also notices the difference between his attractiveness in "person"/in print. I think a lot of his attractiveness is, maybe, the way he moves? He's such an awesome actor.

And that first picture (and yes GUH), is unusual in that I almost expect him to move out of it, somehow the photographer has captured the spirit of his physical presence? Hmm. *must think about this more, possibly while rewatching Serenity*

Thank you for the picspam.

You are most welcome! :D

I don't think there are many actors who would've made the operative in Serenity as understandable, if not actually sympathetic, a character as Ejiofor did. Without a performance as good as his the film, and the Firefly mythos, would've lost a whole layer of meaning (and incidentally retro-actively ruined the character of Book for me).

Have you seen Kinky Boots? What? I had to ask!

Oh ABSOLUTELY. The Operative is mega-sexy and desperately interesting but I think with pretty much anyone else in the role he would have been horribly uninteresting.

What do you mean about Book? I presume the suggestion that he used to be an Operative? Since we never...well since they totally dropped the ball on doing anything with the character or giving us any actual answers?

Have you seen Kinky Boots?

No, actually! I'm well aware of it and desperately wanted to go see it in the cinema, but none of my friends did and between one thing and another I missed it. I keep meaning to pick up the dvd but haven't yet, to my shame. It looks really good, though I admit I'm a little less-invested than I could be on account of thinking that while I'll still get to enjoy his performance, it won't be quite as drool-friendly as films where he's playing, say, a non-transsexual male?

Yes, the implication that Book was once an operative (although, in the story we ended up with, his character was mostly a narrative sleeper waiting for more storytime). If the operative had been a shallow, unsympathetic baddie then it would've retconned Book as a baddie who got good through god, whereas Book was actually a believer who merely switched belief systems without, imo, altering his underlaying personality much at all.

Kinky Boots isn't especially good but it is fun and Lola is surprisingly hot:

BTW, there's another Simm-Ejiofor 'convergence' at the moment: they're both nominated for the same award, alongside Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7231345.stm
