So. The thing that probably most of you are more interesting (and boy does it prove that it's a slow month).

[livejournal.com profile] prolix_allie and I have been having a fabulously interesting discussion about sandwiches. And what weird ones are awesome. So far she has convinced me that peanut butter and red onion could work, and I am plugging for cream cheese and honey (also, peanut butter, grated coconut and raisin is quite nice).

What are your favourite weird sandwiches? BORED ENQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW!

Secondly, STAR WARS.

Dude. I'm trying to catch up with this crazy universe cus I fell unforgivably behind this year, and FOR CRYING OUT LOUD I think it's going to break my external harddrive. I have approximately SIXTY FIVE GIGS of this crap. WTF is WRONG with me?! WHERE DOES IT ALL COME FROM?!

...and that's not even counting the various fan films I've collected over the years. Plus I'm not even up-to-date on this stuff. O_O

Dude, I would totally eat a PB, coconut and raisin sandwich, but I might add honey to the whole thing too. Adding honey makes nearly everything better in my mind. :)

Hmm, my former favorite weird sandwiches used to be cream cheese and salami on plain old white bread or mushroom and American cheese melted for like a minute on a flour tortilla and slathered with A1 steak sauce. Sometimes chicken, but always the A1. And this with the fact that even then I thought American cheese was one of the worst things made.

Now? IDK, I guess some people would consider my ideal of some kind of veggie patty or egg with avacado, melted cheese, red peppers, onion, and spicy mustard to be weird. Probably many of my carnivorous relatives actually. Sometimes I also dip it in hot sauce (er, salsa for everyone else). That count?

DUDE! Cream cheese and salami! My mom totally used to make that for me when I was a kid! I'm starting to think that everything she used to make that weirded out all my friends was just down to her being American. :/

Also, I like American Cheese *ducks thrown objects* but dude, that sounds awesome with the A1 sauce. In the UK it is really hard to get A1. That was something kind of cool about living in Korea - the western food they did have was mostly American so suddenly I COULD get stuff like Goober PB&J sandwich spread and A1 sauce and stuff.

Your veggie patty sounds mostly like something I could get on board with except for the egg thing. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND EGG IN SANDWICHES! Ahem.

But if you're gonna talk about hot sandwiches, then my favourite (which I'm also not sure is weird) is:

1. Toast bread.
2. Spread pesto on the toast.
3. Eviscerate some sardines (I don't care how they come in the tin, I refuse to eat anything that looks like spine.) Then spread eviscerated sardines on the pesto.
4. Cover in sliced cheese (MILD CHEDDAR!)
5. Sprinkle with Worcester Sauce.
6. Grill until brown and bubbling.
7. OM NOM NOM NOM NOM.

Hee! I'm weird with American cheese, in that I have to be totally specific about which kind. Like, the kind peeled straight off the block is ok, but the individually wrapped ones I can't do. But, IT"S THE SAME CHEESE?!! It's a little like I cannot stand peanuts or peanut anything in candies, but will eat peanut butter by the bucket.

But A1 is definitely the way to go, this is making me want to go pick up the stuff for the first time in years to just, melt with cheese again or something.

I can honestly say I have never had a sardine, but I have a deep love of pesto, so I could get behind that maybe (eviscerated too, because little fish spines, EWWWWW!).

*noms on egg sandwich* I do not comprhend this dislike! ;)

OMG! I AM EXACTLY LIKE THIS!! Peanut Butter = HEART. Anything else with peanuts in, like snickers bars or peanut M&Ms = ICK.

Also sardines are looooovely but yes, only when correctly eviscerated.

But then, you like egg sandwiches so clearly you have no taste... :p

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND EGG IN SANDWICHES!

THIS IS BLASPHEMY! Egg and mayonnaise on toast with LOTS of pepper = SO GOOD. *goes to check for eggs in the fridge*

That's probably not weird though. How about mayonnaise, pickles and potato chips on white bread? That's pretty weird. I really am not that much of a mayonnaise fan except apparently on sandwiches.

EGG LOVER! *points and throws, um, eggs?*

I think where I'd stand on the mayo, pickles and crisps sandwich is going to depend entirely on how much mayo you use for it? Because crisp (potato chip) sandwiches are a long playground tradition here! And I do love me some pickles. BUT! I don't really like mayo that much and when people slather sandwiches with it, it's kinda icky (and very unusual in the UK). BUT BUT BUT, my mom - being american, shares this mayo on sandwiches obsession, and used to do it as a treat for me sometimes. Again, like the strawberries, I tihnk, not really realising I wasn't so much a fan.

But I didn't hate it and somehow I now associate using mayo on sandwiches with them being a Real Treat. As long as it's not too much. CURSE MY PAVLOVIAN REACTION TO MAYO!

The peanut butter and red onion may have made me throw up in my mouth a little. :(

I don't know if I have *a* favorite sandwich. I like PB&J with the "J" being either strawberry, peach, blueberry, or pomegranate preserves. And I've refused to give up JIF creamy peanut butter even though I know there are healthier options.

I also like a club sandwich: turkey, bacon, lettuce, mayo (not too much) on white or wheat, hold the tomato.

Chicken salad! I love chicken salad.

The one thing I do that some consider weird is I'll put potato salad *on* a turkey or ham sandwich. I don't know what difference it makes if you eat it on the sandwich or with the sandwich as a side, it's all going in your mouth at the same time.

I dunno, the PB&RO thing was weird to me at first but now I can kind of see it? Sorry to make you feel grossed out though. Blame Allie! :p

I've never really tried PB&J with that wide a variety of jelly mainly because in the UK we don't have that wide a variety of jelly. I mean, you can get stuff like peach, but it's not as common; you have to make a slight effort. Mostly we just have strawberry, raspberry or blackcurrant. Blackcurrant is okay with PB but not great. The other two are both fantastic though and I think raspberry might be my favourite.

\o/ CLUB SANDWICH! I'm right with you on the not-too-much-mayo thing and holding the tomato too.

I think it's maybe a little weird to put your potato salad in your sandwich? But again, since people eat it on the side all the time, I can see why it'd taste good. I'm split on potato salad as it is though - I either love or hate it depending on the ruling constellations way it's made.

So when we FINALLY meet in person and go to lunch we know what to order. ;)

My big thing with potato salad is, again, not too much mayo, I prefer it on the drier side. If the potato is floating, I pass. ;)

I eat some of the weirdest sandwiches. My friends made fun of me for it in school when I packed my lunch. One of my favorites is taking crunchy peanut butter and mixing in maple syrup on a pretzel bun. SO GOOD.

Another good one is grilled banana sandwiches. Slice the banana lengthwise into 4 pieces, put peanut butter on one side of the 2 bread slices, put the banana pieces on the peanut butter sides, and put it together. Mix 2 eggs, 1/3 cup of milk, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla, a fingerfull of salt, and another fingerfull of cinnamon in a bowl. Put the sandwich in the mix (like you would french toast) to coat it. Put the coated sandwich in a skillet on medium heat and cook it for about 4 minutes on each side.

OMFG DUDE. THE GRILLED BANANA SANDWICH SOUNDS AMAAAAAAZING!

Do you dunk the entire sandwich in the mix and then grill the entire sandwich? Or do you dunk the break a la French Toast? Does the sandwich not fall apart?

Either way, WANT.

I dunk the sandwich put together. It sticks together from the peanut butter.

So good.

I happened to see this post and my contribution is macaroni & cheese with jelly, hummus, or peanut butter. I had a few of those sandwiches when I was vacationing with friends some years ago and said friends were all grossed out; I was just starting on vegetarianism (but not veganism) back then, and I had trouble thinking of food at the beach house that was both readily available and easy to make. I think the peanut butter version wasn't as good... which, uh, makes sense, especially in retrospect.

Ooh, forgot to note that those sandwiches were on raisin bread! It made them more yummy. :)

O_O DUDE. You TOTALLY win for weirdest sandwich! :D

I'd try it though! I do love macaroni and cheese even if I'm having trouble imagining it with jelly. I'd have to skip on the hummus though, as I don't really like that stuff.

Plus, you're a vegan? Oy. I really don't think I coul do that... I was a vegetarian for a while (less for political and ethical reasons, I'm sorry to say, more because I thought it would help me eat healthier, which it did, until I discovered all the junk I could eat that wasn't greasy meant-based stuff!) and I didn't really miss the meat, but I do not think I could live without cheese and eggs.

Also RAISIN BREAD! You can't get that in the UK. :( And now I want cinnamon-raisin toast... *sigh*

You can't get raisin bread in the UK? What is with you people???

I could never go Vegan either. I can live without meat, but no eggs, cheese or milk? Life just would not be worth living!!!
