beccatoriaSo! Today I am 26, officially too old for a Young Person's Rail Card. Not that I had one this year anyway since I spent half of it in Korea.
First off, big thanks to everyone who wished me happy birthday! :D

I got an "All Glory to the Hypnotoad!" t-shirt, a couple of DVDs, and some action figures. I got the Star Wars Legacy Cade Skywalker/Darth Talon pack and also Old!Spock from the new Star Trek movie. This was particularly entertaining as Spock came with some weird rubbery tunic that when we pulled off, revealed they made Spock with someone else's recycled RIPPED SIX-PACKED torso beneath his aged Leonard Nimoy head.
Although said rubbery tunic fit quite well as GIANT SITH ROBES for Darth Talon (who usually wanders around in a metal bikini), so I call that a victory for modesty!
My parents are getting me a plane ticket in a few months so my Ma gave me a toy ferrari. It's red, and Ripped Spock fits in it nicely.
In other news,chaila43 posted a scorching review of the problems in the BSG finale which I thoroughly enjoyed reading because, well, I agree with it so hard. I'm trying, guys, but I don't think I'll ever be zen about Daybreak (or a lot of later 4.5). And I'm jealous of you guys that are, at the same time as...I don't want to be because that would mean excusing something so failtastic. So. There we have it. I hated it, and decrying it helps create a space where I can still love the rest of a show that did so much. So I decry it. Via Chaila.

Date: 2009-08-10 09:29 pm (UTC)I got word from my Ma today that yes, it's all go for America and probably I will be there around last week in September/first week in October so no worries about the Farscape con (though dude: JEALOUS!)
I'm still, however, really uncertain as to whether I'll be able to travel to your area of the states or if I'll be stuck in the NYC/New England area. I know that's deeply unhelpful on such a close timescale and hopefully by the end of the week I'll know the actual dates I'll be around and can like, start working out more details.
As to chaila's post, I'm fairly sure you know exactly what I'm going to say since you've been very patiently listening to me say it in one form or another for a good four months now! :p But yeah, it's an interesting discussion there.

He's just...cruising the 'hood in his Ferrari, trying to pick up chicks with his six-pack and creepy old-man head...

Date: 2009-08-11 01:12 am (UTC)Wordy McWord. I was saying stuff like "I'm trying to be okay with it" when...that wasn't really true. Cause I don't want to reconcile myself to that. So when I say I wish I could be zen, I think I mean I wish the show had given me something I could feel okay about, not that I wish I could make myself okay with this. Because once I see the fail, I really, really don't want to excuse it and go back to loving the show. :(
In other news, I AM ALMOST 27 OMFG. And it was a very sad day when I stopped being eligible for student discounts because I was too old, despite the fact that I was actually still a student. Woe.

Since I already have time off in early September for Dragon Con, I might be able to get a day off in early October for a long weekend. Plus, I would need to see if I could swing the expense. But no use planning anything until you have firm travel dates. I also understand you have family that might like to see you. ;)

Also, since you are almost a year ahead of me, you can be like...my age-related canary. If there's
poisonous gas in the mineterrifying things that occur when one turns 27, you can let me know!At least I never had to contend with being too old while still a student; that would be depressing. Student discounts in the UK are always dependent on, well, being a student, so as long as you have a Student Union card, you're in. Actually even some age-related things for young people, like the rail card I mentioned you get re-eligible for if you're a student despite being too old. But frankly, being a student again isn't worth it for a rail card!
Also, due to the ridiculously short UK education system and my birthday falling right before the cutoff date, I left uni with my (utterly useless and artsy) master's degree a month after my 22nd birthday.
In retrospect I probably should have studied something actually USEFUL. :/

I'll definitely be in the NJ/NYC area and about an hour away from Boston at various points. Whether I can come see you depends on a few things, not least whether you can afford to come see me. Though it'd also be neat to see where you're living right now. Anyway, I'll give you a massive breakdown of everything tomorrow.

I still need to get my tattoo finished! the main question is NYC vs. Providence/Boston. I could offer a place for you to stay if the latter, and at least find a place to crash myself if the former. the later the dates the better (as far as my dissertation is concerned).
