It's now, when they're on such completely opposite sides of the metaphysical universe, that they are free to simply be who they are. To be close as twins. Kara is isolated from the real, political world Lee is about to enter, and Lee is isolated from all the military and religious decisions that hang over Kara's head, and in that state, they can look at each other and the context doesn't matter. There's just that other person who they love, adrift, asking for reassurance. It's beautiful.
You put it better than I did, but I felt that Lee and Kara being on separate paths contributed to one of the healthiest exchanges that has ever taken place between them. I’ve always said that the two of them will never work as a couple until they deal with their baggage and find out who they are as individuals. They’ve both been mired in so much unhappiness I couldn’t see them being happy together. But now Lee is no longer trapped by the military and a bad marriage and is exploring his options, making choices that will bring him personal satisfaction. And Kara, who has viewed herself as a frak up her entire life, now sees that she may have within her the ability to help save humanity and lead them to their new home. Both have separate paths they must travel and perhaps when they reach the end of those paths and know who they are they can find their way back to each other.
But I still don't ship them.
Me either! ;)
Can I compare Laura to the new brown-haired Six model? She's called Natalie, right? I love her.
Natalie and Laura, deciding to shoot people because there's not a reason in the world not to. Because they're free, and the safety of their charges depend on them claiming that freedom.
I’m glad you are drawing parallels to them as well. I commented in danceswithwords journal that I wondered if a parallel should be drawn between Laura and Natalie. Both are convinced that their path is the right path and they will go to extremes to ensure that they stay on that path with Laura taking a shot at Kara and Natalie removing the inhibitors on the Centurions. But DWW believed the parallel is between Laura and Cavill because both were trying to preserve the path there people were already on and that it was Natalie and Kara that are alike - both advocating a radical and risky change based on sketchy information.
Here's someone telling her that what she is, isn't bad. After everything that's happened, that's got to be appealing. Especially considering the way one of her "own" - Tigh - just treated her.
I thought Baltar appealed to her as well, not in the sense that she was physically or emotionally attracted to him, but that, intellectually, he was touching upon things she wanted and needed to hear. I don’t think Tigh successfully pimped her out, she chose to sleep with Baltar based on what he was saying to her.
Her internal identity; who she was away from work, was probably always fragile and hollow because it never got any attention. Suddenly she's having to look at herself, away from all those external factors she used to use as crutches to her identity, and she's left with...not a lot. Which considering her very right to an identity is now under siege is probably pretty terrifying.
I don’t have a handle at all on Tory and much of my Flist is struggling to get a handle on her as well so I really appreciate your thoughts on her. It makes a lot of sense, whereas the others have friends, family, or careers that give them a sense of who they are, Tory only has being the President’s assistant, essentially living in someone else’s shadow. She’s made that the focus of her life and now she learns she’s someone or something that could betray all that. Everyone else has a life preserver of some sort. Tigh has Adama and Galactica. Anders has Kara. Tyrol has Cally and Nicky and his crew. Laura doesn’t even really need Tory and Tory finds herself adrift.
