I also wondered if her sisters were actually half-sisters. The picture in this episode showed dad + three girls but no mom, which perhaps suggested divorced parents (though not necessarily, obviously), and the sisters both seemed enough younger than Laura (and looked rather like each other but not hugely like Laura) that I wondered if they might have been from a second marriage. If Laura's mother wasn't their mother, that might explain a lot of how Laura ended up taking care of her mother by herself. *shrugs* I don't know that it matters a lot, but the pieces seemed to fit for me.
