OH JOHN CRICHTON!!!!!!!!!

That was awesome! I rank Farscape vids highest when they make me want to go rewatch the entire series Right NOW, and this one definitely fits the bill! Very nicely done!

Thank you! :D

That's high praise indeed - although also how I feel on watching many Farscape vids. Thanks so much for letting me know you enjoyed it!

Oh wow, this is fabulous. I could probably give you better feedback had I seen more than half of season one. I had to watch a couple of times before I could get past "Skeletor? What are you doing on Farscape?!" (Er, that won't make any sense if you didn't grow up watching The New Adventures of He-Man and She-Ra. *g*) I did remember the part where D'Argo eats the thing off his neck! And liked the contrast between John's early innocence and omg you all weren't kidding about the angst, were you!?

Anyway, it's totally compelling and fun to watch, even not getting most of the references.

And you've got to love those phallic symbols. ;)

Hee! And yes, of course I know who Skeletor is! Does any child born in the eighties not? Actually, I have no idea if you were born in the eighties, though I...think you were? The point is, Scorpius = Skeletor = AHAHAHAHA yes.

Thanks so much for watching, even though you have no idea what's going on! Even better that you still enjoyed it and managed to get the gist. Cus, yeah, there are like...three or four shots total from the first half of season one. :p

And no, we absolutely weren't kidding about the angst, and to be honest, I can think of at least on EPIC MAJOR ANGST PLOTLINE that's almost missing from this vid entirely... o_O Srsly. You're in for a....treat. Yeah, that's the word. Treat.

;)

Yup, born in the eighties. :D

Oh yaay, a treat! ;) But yeah, remind me to come back and watch this after I've seen the whole series. Rewatch is so sloooow. I'm particularly curious about the homophobic rapper thing that Chaila mentioned. ?!?

I'm going to need someone to comes scrape me off the floor, I just bought this Sage Francis CD and IT'S SO PERFECT!

Plus, I'm loving the visual connections you make, not just the awesome wormhole/sex and phallic weapons (though also? I forgot how much I love this show for how aware it is of the symbols it uses), but the specific moments of destruction you picked. There were a lot of places where I think "Guh" is the only possible reaction. ;)

-The intro with the overlays of John and John-as-Scorpius (awesome), plus cocking the trigger on the wormhole closing. Hah.
- :42, shooting Aeryn's replica
- John, Scorpius and their phallic symbols
- the people on the planet they couldn't save at 1:04
- the warhead as John's "detachable penis" through 1:10. !!!
- Sikozu at 1:42
- the overlays starting about 2:14 look amazing.
- Zhann disappearing at 2:30

I'm with [livejournal.com profile] pellucid, I just want to go watch the whole show again. Great job.

EEEE! Yeah, this entire CD is pretty awesome, right?

Thanks so much for such awesome detailed feedback; I always love knowing what parts especially worked for people. You pick a bunch that are my favourites too (the intro, the phallic symbols, the detachable penis, the jump cuts around 2:14) and also some that I was...struggling for an ended up not entirely sure of (Sikozu at 1:42, the planet they couldn't save). It's kind of nice to know they're working for you!

Also I completely agree about the self-awareness. It was the self-awareness of the song that made me know I had to vid it for John. He's...too manly to admit all these things in such stark, self-disgusted ways, but everything about this song, he knows, you know?

Either way, thanks so much for letting me know you liked it!

John Crichton, you so crazy! Which, as with Farscape itself, is partly hilariously funny and partly incredibly poignant.

Apart from the fact that exploding a narrative of hypermasculinity as homoeroticism is, like, the best thing ever in general--and how much do I love the show for knowing it, and you for pulling it all together--gun obsession as homoerotic subtext is pretty perfect for Scorpy/John/wormole tech. (That even sounds a little dirty.) Which, again, hilarious and also sad for John's inability (unwillingness?) to escape it.

There are way too many awesome lyric interpretations to list ("meal plans!," "homophobic rapper" HAHA!, "starting to hate the quiet moments," guh), but:

"Made it to dry land, pistol in hand"

Dude, awesome. There's like six things going on with that clip. I'm going to venture out on a limb and say that moment summarizes this vid: John, who just wants Aeryn, 2.3 kids and a white picket fence, who doesn't (or didn't) think of himself as a violent person and John, who can't have any of that because he has wormhole tech, Scorpy in his head and a penchant for guns and macho heroism. Plus, the gunz/Scorpy obsession as both part of and the third wheel in John/Aeryn is brilliant and so well executed. And just the way the violence and all the stuff that's happened makes John unable to be still and let any of it catch up with him. John Crichton is pretty much the only "hero" I've ever liked as much as I really do like him, and all of this is why. Not to mention the spiffy editing there!

Actually, your editing here is marvelous. And I don't know if it's the fact that Farscape is so gorgeous or the new software or a combination, but this vid is so pretty.

Also, how did you do the little thing that happens around :42 and 1:44 (among other places) where people sort of disappear in a cool-looking manner? *wants*

I want to draw a heart around this entire comment because you explain everything I want to say but didn't have the words for. Just absolutely YES for the way John's insanity is both poignant and hilarious, for the way the show, and John, xplode hypermasculinity into homoeroticism, with all the self-awareness but quite as much of the unavoidable in-your-faceness of this song, yes to John's inability to escape it that we have to start wondering at some point - what percentage of unwillingness is there?

And I'm so glad you liked "Made it to dry land..." Because that wasn't actually one of the initial associations I had but I knew it was important and I spent...a long time trying to find the right clip. My thinking wasn't as clear as you lay it out there, but basically, that's why I did it yes. This idea that that moment, John pulling the gun - first reaction to being saved, in tandem with the girl he'd destroy the universe to save, is both completely in keeping with his character and completely opposite to everything he wanted to believe about himself (but no longer can).

*bounces because you get it!*

Actually, your editing here is marvelous. And I don't know if it's the fact that Farscape is so gorgeous or the new software or a combination, but this vid is so pretty.

I think it's a combination of the software making it easier to do pretty things like overlays, me continuing to improve and the fact that Farscape is so damn pretty?

Also, how did you do the little thing that happens around :42 and 1:44 (among other places) where people sort of disappear in a cool-looking manner? *wants*

Oh, those are just straight jump-cuts. It's hard to do in BSG because the camera moves so much, but in Farscape the camera is usually very steady and in those scenes, the non-disappearing person (if there is one) remains still for a very long time. So I'm just playing a clip where Person X is in the shot, then moving forward a couple of seconds to where Person X isn't in a shot but everyone else is still more or less in the same position, if that makes sense?

Thanks again! :D

Jump cuts, really? *watches again* Funny how there's probably all sorts of things that look cool that you can't do with BSG footage so I think they're all fancy. Yay expanding outside BSG and playing with new toys! Although that makes me realize how spiffy your editing actually is here? Cause without all the messy motion of BSG, you've still made even the non-actiony sequences really dynamic here just with interesting cutting.

Date: 2009-08-08 12:01 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com
Aww, shucks. ;) Though you speak as though I'm some kind of crazy experienced non-BSG vidder which really, I'm not!

I think most of the dynamism of the piece is because the music is so fast it demands and supports jump-cutting; I'm not sure what I really would have done to keep it moving otherwise? I did definitely enjoy playing outside the BSG sandbox and kind of wish I had more non-BSG vid bunnies, even though other footage is intimidating. But so far...no. I guess we'll have to wait and see?

Anyway, I don't think my editing is quite as spiffy as you think it is, but I'm glad you like it! :D

ALSO HEE MATCHING ICONS!

Truthfully, I think I gush about your editing because it's pretty unfamiliar to me and therefore just looks so different than anything I think I could ever produce. Because I always love your vids but generally our editing styles are so different that it sort of intrigues me. I'm drawn a lot more to simpler songs, generally, and don't do that well with songs that require dynamism, whereas I think you excel there. I've gotten better with stuff like speed, but this quick cutting I still kind of haven't mastered. I think you trust the viewer's eye more than I do or something, because I always worry that no one will be able to tell what's going on if I cut too fast, but you just go for it and it always works. Anyway, I love your jumpy jump cutting, it's very "you." :)

you did a spectacular job surmounting the static issue in Farscape footage with fancy editing. and I'm very proud of you for how dirty this is! John/Scorpy FTW. and the meta is EPIC WIN too. if I were more familiar with PKW/boys I know I would appreciate it even more!

I see several references in the comments here to Farscape being visually very static. This makes me feel old. I remember when Farscape was being praised for being a show of fast camera movements and fast cuts... and I remember how slow it made stuff like Star Trek feel. I know that I've always ascribed the particular hugeness of vidding in Farscape fandom at least partly to the fact - or what seemed to me like a fact, anyway - of Farscape being, well, fast-moving etc. But to the latest generation of fen, Farscape probably feels like Star Trek... Weird thought!

Anyway. Off to watch this now, with tingles of anticipation in my belly...

(Sorry for the delay. I can't really explain it. My life/mental state has been... weird, recently. Not bad, just kind of overwhelmed and... oh, I dunno.)

If it makes you feel better, I consider the camera movement in Farscape to be fairly static as compared to BSG. But BSG makes unusual use of faux-handheld effects and was an early show to do so - now it's very trendy. Farscape is actually quite innovative in its use of camera movement in that many of its establishing shots move slowly, panning at odd angles to mimic waves on the ocean - but often this is too slow to capture in a vid, especially a fast-paced one.

And what Farscape has in abundance, and what makes it so popular to vid, is its visual richness in terms of what's on screen, rather than how it's filmed. Star Trek's, or Babylon 5's, problem is that in addition to static camera angles, the actors are often very static - scenes themselves are not dynamic - and this is not an issue Farscape has at all.

So my comments at least are specifically in relation to camera movement and handheld shakiness which is very, very prominent in BSG and which I had to get used to working without; in Farscape even when there is camera movement, it's smooth, because the conceit isn't that it's being filmed on a camcorder. I honestly think that would have been a major adjustment to me WHATEVER I'd been filming just because a lot of my vidding learning curve happened with this facet of the footage to make use of?

/really long diatribe cus, um, I find this stuff fascinating. ;)

I really, really hope you like it. Don't worry about the delay. I miss you cus I love you, but, I'm still here. My life is weird too, I get it. We're both gonna be fine.

*hugs you*

I liked it a lot!

I've already recced it at my LJ, though somewhat tepidly because my brain is currently in a place where I can't do much more than write flat, one-paragraph entries, apparently. (As you may have noticed from the lack of 'real' updates to my LJ in recent weeks.)

I'll do a better rec at fs_10percent later. This is a worthy vid to restart my reccing project with! :-)

Thank you! :) I'm really glad you enjoyed it. As to the comment levels, I cleverly was entirely monofannish in my vidding for a very, very long time, and then vidded a show that ended five years ago. ;) But it's quality over quantity! So thanks again!

Oh, I love this! And the whole thing brings to mind Scorpy's comment to John from PKW: "You enjoy this, don't you John?" Like, how much of his inability to escape the kinds of situations he gets into is his own fault, at least on some level?
