Okay, so, I still want to do an epic Doctor Who River Song reaction post because dude, that finale, omgz (there will be a vid, ijs).

BUT.

That will have to wait because this vid has stolen away all the space in my brain that can be devoted to wonder.

We Are All Connected by [livejournal.com profile] kiki_miserychic.

It's a Stargate: Universe vid. I don't watch Stargate: Universe, and have no intention of starting (the five minutes I saw actively did not impress me). And I usually have trouble connecting with vids for which I am not familiar with the source.

But this vid is phenomenal. I'm sure that if you do know the source, the complex intricacies always present in [livejournal.com profile] kiki_miserychic's work will make it even more incredible, but speaking as someone who has not seen the source, there was a elegant beauty - a fittingness to the fact I did not know these people.

The reason for that is the music. It's one of the most breathtaking tracks I've heard - it's by Symphony of Science and it is one. It's euphoric and lyrical and melodic and computerised and vast and everything awe inspiring and wonderful about being the tiniest speck in an infinite cosmos.

In those terms, the fact I did not know these people - these beautiful, fast, angry, hurt, loving, bleeding, dying, intelligent, frightened, connected people - made the vid all the more awe-inspiring.

It really did give me chills.

Please, go watch it.

I was really shocked by how...un-Davieslike it was! It felt like a proper ending to an awesome fairytale.

Having watched the whole season, I am quite convinced a large part of it was Moffat wanting to address all of the shit RTD pulled out of his arse, and fix it. And say look, this is how you're supposed to do story telling.

There are of course inevitably people complaining because it was too complicated.

Makes me think about what Stephen Fry said about it being a kids show. RTD made a flat-out kiddies tv show, with running and shouting and explosions. But Moffat has made it a show that has a lot more for adults to appreciate once again.

Yeah, I get that feeling too, though I'm not sure whether all the RTD stuff that got eaten by the cracks stayed eaten or not? I think they did though, cus Amy's parents would have if she hadn't remembered them and only Amy could do the "remembering to bring it back" thing. Or something.

It's weird - if you read interviews with Moffat he's very, very complimentary about RTD, like beyond what he needs to be to just be polite and professional - I genuinely get the impression he likes and appreciates him. But then, when I look at the show - if I just had to guess as to his feelings from the stories he's telling. Oy. I'd say he feels as strongly as me on the issue.

I thought Fry's comments were a real shame. Firstly just because there's nothing that says a kids' show can't be deep and meaningful. Skellig is a kids' book and it's also one of the most lovely things I've read in a long time. But he's also flat out incorrect. It's a family show. Or, to use a less loaded term because we don't all live in traditional nuclear family shows, it's a show for everyone. I understand that some stories suffer from that - but not this one. It's for everyone of every age. That means that it'll never be as dark and brutal as the Sopranos, but it also means that it shouldn't be as simplistic as the Teletubbies. I mean this series has a lot of humour and things to appeal to kids but it's also had episodes dealing with mental health issues, rather forward sexual innuendo and the possibility that the doctor is married to his own murderer. So you know, SUCK IT, FRY.

I think perhaps the BBC and RTD and his production crew thought they were making a kids show. I often heard them saying specifically, it was a kids show. (Which I think to large extent explained the simple stories RTD told. And also the contempt RTD had for older fans who criticised his story telling, because he seemed to default to 'what are you doing watching this anyway, its a kids show!')

But yes, I agree. It's a family show.

And its possible isn't it, that the entire RTD era has now been Moffed out of canon. I doubt it though. But the possibility amuses me.

That vid, wow. I think it made me fall in love with a show that I'd merely liked before.
