Dudes, I started making this in November 2010 and then somehow...stopped for nearly a year. I don't usually do that, and I always thought the idea was kinda fun. So I finally finished it. Have a vid.

Title: Here We Come, On The Run!
Video: Star Wars [Original Trilogy]

LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIA!

Oh, this makes the Star Wars part of my heart SO HAPPY. I can't wait until it's Christmas and I can watch ALL OF THEM.

\o/ YAY! :D So glad you liked it! I think there must be a very specific correlation between being born in the 80s and associating Star Wars with Christmas... Did they always play it on telly over Christmas in Canada too?

As to the icon, I'm sure it is. I got it from a public icon post - made by [livejournal.com profile] duncatra.

I have no idea...I associate it with Christmas because in grand tradition of being prepared for snow, that's what we watch when all of us get snowed in on Boxing Day. :)

LEIA! Oh my gosh, the editing to the beat here is fantastic. But it's from minute 2 that it gets epic. The little celebration denouement at the end made me smile so much. (Ewoks! You made me enjoy them!)

(Also ha, the fact you dropped this for a year makes me suddenly feel a lot better about doing the same thing with my new vid.)

Awww, yay. I'm really happy that you liked the later section because I really wanted it to get epic but because of the way the film plays out, Leia isn't in as much of a visual command position and I was worried she'd get lost in the shuffle instead of being the middle of the epic. But I ended up quite liking the way it played out, but was afraid I was sort of wrong on the point, so thank you for validating my biased viewpoint! :p

And yes, I totally dropped it for a year. IT IS A THING THAT IT IS OKAY TO DO. ;)

She suuuuuper is, and thanks, I'm glad it came through. I was worried the focus on her leadership position would suffer for not including quite as many of the shots where she was actively shooting stormtroopers and stuff, but I really wanted to paint her as the commander in a war! Thanks so much for commenting and I'm thrilled you enjoyed it!

I think what I love most about this vid is that you focused on her work fighting the Empire, without getting sidetracked into her relationships with Han and Luke (other than as allies and fellow rebels), and how even in the scenes where she's dressed as a dancing girl it's totally free of the usual male-gazeyness, it's all about Leia Getting Stuff Done, her clothing or lack thereof being totally incidental. I don't know if that makes even the slightest sense, but I loved this vid for being so resolutely focused on Leia as she is and does rather than as others see her.

This also reminds me of how brilliant "When I Was a Boy" was for similar reasons -- subverting the typical interpretation of the story without changing the essence or nature of the characters at all. So in case I forgot to say that when I watched it -- thank you for that one, too!

Thank you! And thank you for your kind comments about "When I Was a Boy" also!

I'm really happy you liked that aspect of the vid, because yes, it was definitely intentional. I wanted to showcase her not just as an action chick (with all the usual associated tropes, including love interests/inclusion of sexuality into asskicking, etc.) but as a person in a position of command power? Like, what she manages to achieve physically and politically on a larger scale than just shooting a trooper in the head, or snogging a boy. Which is why I deliberately cut out the interpersonal stuff and also tried to tie her more into the large-scale battles where she had a commanding, logistical role, rather than just focusing on the small-scale skirmish action where she shoots off a gun a few times? Not that I dislike that she is also able to bullseye a stormtrooper, I just wanted to focus on a part of her character that I think - much as I love the films - was largely left to implication.

Thanks again for such a thoughtful comment!

Eeee, I'm all aflail!! The whole thing is super catchy and I feel like I'm seeing, maybe not an entirely different trilogy, but possibly an even more awesome one all about how Leia GETS STUFF DONE, like the boss she is. Even when she's not actually in the shot, it still feels like she's in command. I love it.

YAAAAAAY! :D I'm so you feel Leia's presence throughout - that was totally the goal - to make it seem like a slightly different perspective on the same events, but especially in the last section where there's not as much footage of her in Command Centres, etc., I was kind of worried that her presence wasn't clear enough - so thrilled to hear otherwise! ♥

Rewatching the original trilogy is always a good response to anything! :D I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Leia's pretty awesome - I actually didn't get to put as much of her individual moments of asskicking in as I was planning to because I decided to focus more on the big military actions of the chorus, but I'm sure she's a better shot than Han and Luke put together... ;)

Spectacular! This vid is masterful as a feminist revisioning (new word!) of the story with Leia as protagonist. My favorite feature is the overlays on the chorus, which are both gorgeous and thematically effective at placing Leia at the center of the action. You deserve lots of acclaim from Star Wars [oops] people -- this is so much fun.

Aww, yay! It was super fun to reimagine the whole thing as a story about her meteoric rise to political power through military genius. Which as far as I'm concerned is totally what was happening in those films! Yeah, I'm glad the overlays worked as well as they did. I originally just planned to intercut, but it really just wasn't visually clear, even in situations like the first chorus where she's clearly in a situation room type of place so I went with the trickier option and fortunately I don't think it looks shoddy.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D

eeee! I know I can always count on you to lift up the more under-appreciated elements of female character arcs, but this was really something! I love how your cuts between piloting action sequences and leia highlight her influence within the conflicts even when she is not on-screen, but also suggest her steadiness in the midst of political chaos.

Often I will watch Xena or Voyager for the soothing feeling of a competent lady making things right in the world, and this vid really generated those feelings for me <#

From: [identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com
\o/ So glad it gives you that feeling! And one day all the arcs I vid will be appreciated by the masses, but until then I shall subversively edit women into the foreground of the narrative. :p

I said as much to a few other commenters above, but am glad for the chance to reiterate, it's so gratifying to hear that by the end I had managed to create a setup where her implication as an influential force on the battle in political and military terms was clear, because the end was the part I was most worried about since it was the one battle sequence I knew I didn't have footage of her actively directing in some capacity but rather participating in as a soldier also, and not in the same arena as the rest of the events (i.e. not in spaaaaaace).

I love how you describe her as steady. That's perfect. *hugs it*

This is a joyful and enjoyable vid.
