So since most everyone else was going to the London Comic Convention Thing that's going on today, I decided, on something of a whim, to go to the Cardiff Comic Expo since it was around the corner and stuff. Which turned out to be a totally good choice for the day, if not for my wallet.

First off, though, I'm not sure if this is normal for comics conventions - I've not been to enough to know, alas - but our city library had an AWESOME presence there. They had this whole huge stall full of their (really excellent) graphic novel selection that was being run by this kick ass Poison Ivy cosplayer, signing people up for new library cards, checking your cards still worked - you couldn't check out books right there, but you could reserve them to be sent to your local branch for the following Monday. I first ever got into graphic novels by reading them from the city library; I felt so proud!

And the Library folks ALSO had a whole room upstairs that was set aside for activities they were running, like Zombie Make-Up demonstrations (which is apt, considering my local branch looks like it was designed with a zombie invasion in mind), a free reading area where you could read some more of their book selections, an interactive design-your-own superhero competition for kids and a small cosplay costume exhibit along with free space with paper and pens for to discuss and design new costumes with a few seminars throughout the weekend about the best way to do it.

I feel this makes my library pretty damn awesome.

Also I managed to find ALL the backissues of Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers series for a pound each, which is pretty awesome, though that was still £30 altogether, which is a bit steep for something I'm not sure I'll love, but I hear good things and it was an impulse purchase, so.

More entertainingly, I totally found some WELSH GRAPHIC NOVELS. Okay, so they're translated, but unlike most stuff translated into Welsh, which is basically just really popular English stuff (and the other stuff this place was selling was like...Tin Tin and other older stuff or kids' stuff), this has a legitimate reason to be translated. It's a historical fantasy set in the 5th Century in the ancient Celtic world, where one of the main characters is the last Breton (Celtic France) druid and the other one is a Brithonic priest who had a monastery in what later became formally known as Wales. The series is originally French and published in French, but has since been translated to Welsh. And English too, I think, but that is less exciting to me. Also I think they're further behind on that, I think it's just the first two that are done in English as opposed to five in Welsh (I think the actual French series is up to 6 so far).

Here is a dorky trailer for the first one!

Yay for conventions! I didn't even know there was a London one on this weekend, bad comics fan. Mind you, I'm ill so I wouldn't have been able to go anyway.

Hope you enjoy Seven Soldiers... I think I liked the concept more than the execution, if you get what I mean, but I still enjoyed it. There an intro and finale issue as well by the way... I think they were Seven Soldiers 0 and 1. I've got them if you need them :)

Thanks, but I actually got Seven Soldiers 0 & 1 too! :D I'll let you know what I think. I at least like Zatanna, Mister Miracle, and Shining Knight a lot so hopefully I'll enjoy their mini series anyways. Grant Morrison is...very good at concept. ;)

I didn't really know there was a comic convention on in London either until I came home and coincidentally saw an article about it and was all, "HUH."

Sorry to hear you're sick, though! Get well soon!
