Pirates of the Carribbean: At World's End
May. 26th, 2007 12:14 pmWow!
They made me LIKE Elizabeth! They made me dislike Will ever MORE! There was JACK!
What the hell happened to Elizabeth at the end. I mean, yes, I stayed past the end of the credits. But...what? Will ditches her on an island and then...ten years later she's on a different island with a child of...deeply ambiguous gender (but I believe to be male)? What's she been doing? We got to see what everyone ELSE was doing...
It's not like she can go back to civilisation because 1) even if they stop being QUITE so murderous to pirate associates and stop, you know, hanging you for having once seen someone who might have once bought a pirate a drink, I doubt they're going to offer leniancy to THE FREAKIN' KING OF ALL PIRATES WHO LED THE PIRATE FLEET TO VICTORY AND NUKED THE FLAG SHIP OF THE EAST INDIA COMPANY! And 2) I doubt she has enough cash to be independently wealthy since I don't imagine they'll be releasing her father's assets to THE KING OF ALL PIRATES.
So if it's back to civilisation it's in hiding, and who, at this point in time, is going to offer a knocked-up "widow" a great job? So that's a woefully depressing option.
Which leaves pirating. But, what, is she going to Singapore to rule there instead of Sao Feng? Would anyone actually respect her technical authority? Or is Jack Sr going to let her chill out at Shipwreck Cove? (Actually that seems like a reasonable proposition; he's all about respecting the code and according to the code she's the KING OF ALL PIRATES.
But would it have killed them to give us a thirty second scene of what she actually spends most of the rest of her life doing? Other than, you know, waiting torturously for Will for a single day a decade later?
Eh.
But I forgive all. Because it had a giant fifty foot woman in it. And you just don't get that type of shit in films anymore.

Date: 2007-05-26 01:40 pm (UTC)Bottom line is that she still has a sucky deal, being 10 years older every time she sees Will.
And remember when said fifty foot woman was yelling a lot? What the hell was she saying? I didn't have time to figure out if it was the same weirdly-accented English before she, uh, became shellfish.

Date: 2007-05-26 04:50 pm (UTC)She might not have been dressed all piratey but she wasn't dressed girly either, right? I mean, staying at Shipwreck Cove seems like the most sane option. Other options seem depressing since, like you say, she got a raw deal with Will. Though I don't care that much since I don't like Will all that much and really don't want Elizabeth to be doomed to acceptable, demure retirement.
Plus, can she retire the Kingship? Could she hand it over? Not likely without another pirate court and another vote. Which won't happen until a bunch of dudes sing that song in dire circumstances again... Hmm...
Well, anyway, I feel a little clearer on it now, anyway.
Also, I think that the fifty foot woman's shouting was deliberately unintelligable - like ocean roar, alien, rageful, primitive. But that could just be me. And of course then she turned into shellfish...

Date: 2007-05-26 10:35 pm (UTC)As for where she was, I thought she returned to England or some British port and perhaps was taken in by family or got a hold of her father's money. I assumed their night on the island was the equivalent of a honeymoon and then she went back to the Pearl and they dropped her off somewhere. Who knows though since so many plotlines were left dangling and questions went unanswered. I mean, Calypso becomes the fifty foot woman, turns into a bunch of crabs, then a really big storm and.....THAT'S IT?!

Date: 2007-08-02 02:55 pm (UTC)I don't mind that it wasn't a happy ending though. I know HOllywood is programmed to make happy endings because that's what viewers want, but sometimes, I like when things are a little more realistic (she says of the story featuring 50' crab women)
More importantly, the whole concept was made moot by the fact that Davey Jones had stood on land in the movie! They just put him in a bucket of water. Okay so it would make for a difficult time of sex or taking the kid to the zoo, but they could still see each other more often. I can only reason that Will's job of ferrying souls simply keeps him away from town for 10 years.
And yes, Calypso's vengeance was just a wee bit disappointing.
