MONEY! ENDLESS MONEY!

DUDE.
I RETURNED MY TAX THINGY TO THE GOVERNMENT BECAUSE I QUIT MY JOB A FEW MONTHS BEFORE THE END OF THE TAX YEAR AND FIGURED THAT THEY PROBABLY OWED ME ABOUT £300.
SO THEY WERE PRANNITS AND I SPENT MONTHS CHASING THEM AND BEING TOLD I HAD TO FILL OUT DIFFERENT FORMS AND GETTING CONFUSED.
AND FINALLY, TODAY, I GET MY CHEQUE.
FOR £1,381. THIS IS APPROXIMATELY $2,700.
WTF?!
MONEY! ENDLESS MONEY!
I mean everything on looks...vaguely right (not that I really understand taxes) and basically it looks like they were taxing me at the wrong rate for eighteen months. o.O
But the point is, I just got nearly a grand and a half of FREE MONEY.
I'm torn between the desire to be responsible, use it to pay off 90% of my overdraft so I can go to S. Korea almost debt free (which would be nice since at part of the reason we were going to go there was to help get rid of lingering college debts), and the desire to take some of it and go SHOPPING. I'm not even a shopping-spree-a-holic. There's nothing I even want right now.
I just.
MONEY. THIS IS MORE MONEY THAN I'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN IN A CHEQUE BEFORE. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW THIS HAPPENED. *FLAIL*

Date: 2008-06-25 12:44 pm (UTC)Well, I say compromise. Treat yourself to something you don't really need, but want and put the rest towards your debt and travel expenses.
Btw, I am still working on The Thing, but it's been a crazy last few days and now I've entered the PMS zone. :/

Date: 2008-06-25 06:35 pm (UTC)so, as you can imagine, i paid off the last of my debts, had some fun, and bought myself a new laptop (the original plan being to buy one for my mum - but i found one that **i** wanted, so she ended up with my old one! **g**)
(well, i SAY old one - it was only 6 months old... **blush**)
mind you, when i first started working, 20 years back, i was on emergency tax for a few months - after 3, maybe 4 months, i got a £300 rebate in my wage packet - this was actually a fair bit more than i had actually paid, but what the hell, it got spent!
somehow, they kept on giving me that rebate every month for the next 3 months!
as you can imagine, my memories from that time are exceedingly sketchy!!
hell, my liver STILL hasnt recovered :D
