MONEY! ENDLESS MONEY!

DUDE.
I RETURNED MY TAX THINGY TO THE GOVERNMENT BECAUSE I QUIT MY JOB A FEW MONTHS BEFORE THE END OF THE TAX YEAR AND FIGURED THAT THEY PROBABLY OWED ME ABOUT £300.
SO THEY WERE PRANNITS AND I SPENT MONTHS CHASING THEM AND BEING TOLD I HAD TO FILL OUT DIFFERENT FORMS AND GETTING CONFUSED.
AND FINALLY, TODAY, I GET MY CHEQUE.
FOR £1,381. THIS IS APPROXIMATELY $2,700.
WTF?!
MONEY! ENDLESS MONEY!
I mean everything on looks...vaguely right (not that I really understand taxes) and basically it looks like they were taxing me at the wrong rate for eighteen months. o.O
But the point is, I just got nearly a grand and a half of FREE MONEY.
I'm torn between the desire to be responsible, use it to pay off 90% of my overdraft so I can go to S. Korea almost debt free (which would be nice since at part of the reason we were going to go there was to help get rid of lingering college debts), and the desire to take some of it and go SHOPPING. I'm not even a shopping-spree-a-holic. There's nothing I even want right now.
I just.
MONEY. THIS IS MORE MONEY THAN I'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN IN A CHEQUE BEFORE. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW THIS HAPPENED. *FLAIL*

Date: 2008-06-25 12:44 pm (UTC)Well, I say compromise. Treat yourself to something you don't really need, but want and put the rest towards your debt and travel expenses.
Btw, I am still working on The Thing, but it's been a crazy last few days and now I've entered the PMS zone. :/

Date: 2008-06-25 03:38 pm (UTC)I am glad to hear you are working on The Thing, I would have emailed you if I hadn't heard anything by next week sometime. But don't worry about hurrying - I only just finished My Thing (which should be up later today, stupid aspect ratio source material issues and taking twice as long as usual to edit because I decided to try and be clever about timings), and I haven't even started on the final Prelinger Thing, so basically...that boils down to 1) I'm glad you haven't forgotten about it and 2) no need to apologise, it's not like I'm going anywhere (for a while!)
Also ::hugs:: re: PMS zone. :(

Date: 2008-06-26 01:27 am (UTC)I hope to make progress on The Thing before next week! What happened was I had all these other things I've been meaning to get to and I finally decided that, OK, I'm going to work on accomplishing those things so I won't have them to stress about any longer and then I can work on The Thing. ;) The awesome thing is that in addressing the other things some cool things happened! :)

Date: 2008-06-26 12:19 pm (UTC)But I do have an idea! Yesterday I found out a friend is coming to stay for a week in a few weeks' time, so I think I might put a chunk of the cash aside for a Grand Day Out Somewhere. I think I like that idea. But we'll see what she has to say on the subject...
Re: the Thing! YAY! And hooray for Other Things that make Cool Things happen. And Things.
Regarding my own schedule, some stuff has been pushed around, so I'll probably be working on the Prelinger Thing this weekend and early next week, but then hopefully we can get to the Hilarious Thing later next week? Hope that's all right? But also send me stuff whenever you're ready because it's not like I can't MULTITASK! (Well okay, I'm not great at that, but I also have the attention span of a goldfish, so many things at once = good).

Date: 2008-06-27 04:16 am (UTC)And A Grand Day Out sounds...grand!

Date: 2008-06-29 01:23 am (UTC)Now I just have to hope that I can do as well with the Thing which, if you hadn't gathered from my recent post, I'm looking forward to! (Though I hope it's clear the post is in the spirit of bouncy boredness rather than bugging you specifically - there really is no hurry except my own meanderingly short attention span... :p)

Date: 2008-06-25 01:20 pm (UTC)The same thing happened to me once, I was completely flabbergasted!! Spend a little bit on something nice, use to rest to suckerpunch your debts. Awesome!

Date: 2008-06-25 03:41 pm (UTC)My plan is mostly to suckerpunch the debts, yes, though I'd like to spend a little on "something nice", I really have no idea what because I'm moving countries in less than two months so buying things seems somewhat redundant. Eh, I'm sure I can think of something! :D

Date: 2008-06-25 10:00 pm (UTC)And I'm glad you appreciate my tags...to be honest, as you can see, it makes it rather hard to find things, but it's also endlessly entertaining when I'm bored and wonder, "what was that post about?!"

Date: 2008-06-25 06:35 pm (UTC)so, as you can imagine, i paid off the last of my debts, had some fun, and bought myself a new laptop (the original plan being to buy one for my mum - but i found one that **i** wanted, so she ended up with my old one! **g**)
(well, i SAY old one - it was only 6 months old... **blush**)
mind you, when i first started working, 20 years back, i was on emergency tax for a few months - after 3, maybe 4 months, i got a £300 rebate in my wage packet - this was actually a fair bit more than i had actually paid, but what the hell, it got spent!
somehow, they kept on giving me that rebate every month for the next 3 months!
as you can imagine, my memories from that time are exceedingly sketchy!!
hell, my liver STILL hasnt recovered :D

Date: 2008-06-25 10:02 pm (UTC)But yeah, your story about the laptop sounds as awesome as mine! Hooray for unexpected money!

Date: 2008-06-25 10:15 pm (UTC)I agree with the sensible plans of something shiny (DVD set? Computer accessory? Bookses for reading in Korea? Okay, clearly I am getting vicarious about your windfall now...) and putting the rest toward debt. HURRAH FOR TAX'S FAVOURABLE STUPIDITY.

Date: 2008-06-26 12:21 pm (UTC)And I'm thinking about putting the money towards a Grand Day Out when my friend comes to stay, though normally I'd totally be up for DVD sets and books and computer things, I'm just trying not to acquire more material stuff before I leave...
