beccatoria: (vid all the things!)

Yes, it's late. I'm late with everything. I'm behind with everything! I haven't posted in forever! In my defense the last month has been not only holiday season but also I now have a house which is pretty fucking amazing (and down to a lot of help, I am acutely aware of how lucky I am), but required time and cleaning and work done and...things. Also for the last week I have been really fucking sick. I THINK I'm starting to feel better now. I hope.

Anyway, I didn't vid much of anything this year, comparatively, which is a little sad. But, oh well.

Not a traditional vid, but I made a series of web comic trailers for My So-Called Secret Identity, and the first one went live at this point.

Another Life [TSCC] [Cameron/Derek] [[community profile] tightpresent Exchange]
With Blood [Mass Effect] [Commander(s) Shepard] [Vidukon Premiere]

The second and third trailers for My So-Called Secret Identity went live. The second was originally a donation reward, but is now publicly available.

Atlas [BSG] [Cylons] [Wedding Gift for [personal profile] cyborganize and [personal profile] metatxt]

Counting Stars [Wonder Woman] [Birthday Gift for [personal profile] chaila]

Hymn to the Hollow [Sleepy Hollow] [Ensemble] [Made as part of the Aims Vid Album.

Counting Stars, I think. It's actually hard. I think because I made fewer vids, I made sure the ones I made were really ones I wanted to make. Which may sound odd considering I made basically everything For Occasions, but that doesn't mean I wasn't using prior inspiration and passion. But yeah. I think Counting Stars basically because I managed to make a Diana vid. Sure, it's not what I'd've made if I had visual representation of my favourite arcs, I'm acutely aware that I was using limited footage from a variety of animated sources. Still, I felt like I managed to make a character vid in a way I didn't when I made I Need A Hero, which I adore and found totally exhilarating to make, but ultimately is limited to LOOK, LOOK ACTION HERO. I felt that this managed a little more, at least approach a character vid, and that meant a lot to me.

Least Favourite
Particularly given most of these were for assignments or gifts or actual jobs, I think I'm actually gonna skip this one. Technically, I suppose, it'd be the comic book trailers, but only because I felt like I was in many ways learning to vid still imagery and trying to work out all the things I could do stylistically. I was at the beginning of a curve again and really didn't want to blow it. So on that level, they were the most stressful to make, and the ones I'm most critical of, looking back, because it's a whole new medium and I keep thinking of things I could do better/differently. That seems ungrateful though, because it was a really excellent experience to get to make them. I'm really grateful I got that chance. I just wish I'd done it better, you know?

Most Successful
With Blood, I think. It said exactly what I wanted, in the way I wanted. I suppose the fact I don't feel the need to write a paragraph explaining why adds weight to the notion, too.

Most Underappreciated by the Universe
Atlas, because who, really, expected me to ever vid BSG again, and it's short, and basically no one watched it. But I think it's really beautiful.

Most Fun Video
I think I'm also going to choose the My So-Called Secret Identity trailers for this, because for all they were difficult, it was also pretty fun to - after all the hard work learning how to do it - look at it and think, yeah, you know, it looks like a comic. That was neat. That was a fun thing that I got to be part of doing.

Vid with the Single Sexiest Moment
With Blood for the love interest montage; sexy both in content and editing because even though I like the shifts throughout, I think they're particularly effective there.

Biggest Vid Fail
MAKE MOAR VIDS BECKA. (Also finish your open source Mass Effect clipping project. That would be good too.)

Hardest Video to Make
In all honestly on a technical level, probably With Blood. I know I talked above about the comics trailers but that was more conceptual. On a purely technical level, lining up the Shepard stuff frame-by-frame to shift between was harder than you'd think, because I was using a lot of playthrough footage. That meant differing frame-rates, masking out subtitles, etc. So I say that was harder than the comics stuff because while that was challenging, it was engaging. This was often just dull work trying to hold on to how awesome it'd be when it was over (which it was!)

On an emotional level, though, I'd probably say Another Life. I signed up to that exchange and basically put no restrictions on what I'd vid, because it honestly is one of the only shows I can think of where I thought I was happy to vid anything. So of course, my prompt is Cameron/Derek! Which I should note I have nothing fundamentally against, I just didn't even consider it as like, a thing that someone would want! And honestly I was a little stumped for a while because they have so few scenes together. But as I rewatched and thought about it, I really gained an appreciation for the weight their few scenes carry. It ended up probably more gen than I'd've liked, but I think that'll always just be...the overtone of how I "ship" things. But I think it was very strongly rooted in their relationship and the way it existed in different forms in different times. Man, that show. It really was just so thematically coherent and excellent. Every character had complex, layers relationships with every other character. And apparently I really can vid anything. Huh. ;)

Most Unintentionally Telling Video
Hymn to the Hollow because who among us knew how much we'd end up loving this show, huh? And then, I went and loved it so much that when asked to participate in the Aims Vid Album I decided to vid it even though we had less than ten episodes to work with. And god, but I do love it. And think it's beautiful. And hopefully the vid shows that.

Things I've Learned
The biggest thing I've learned is in terms of working with still images. I also started learning to use Lightworks, but found it (at the time) unworkable for everyday vidding in its early beta stage. Although just this week I ended up looking at a later version of the beta and that seems much more usable. I may have to seriously start learning that as a project for next year.

I guess I also learned that vidding no longer forces its way into my life like an addiction, which is actually sort of sad. But on the other hand, it doesn't make it less important to me.

Things to Work On
From the above, practical things this year, I think. Learn Lightworks. Work on making more time to vid. Finish clipping project.

Meme complete!

As always, if anyone has any questions about any of my vids or the process of making them, please feel free to ask! :D

COUNTING STAAAAAARS! It is definitely a character vid! I know because it gives me many Diana character feels. *rewatches* Even if we will always have to commiserate that we can't vid our actual favorite Diana character moments. :(

Aw it makes me sad if people did not watch Atlas, it really is beautiful.

Remember when I was gonna learn Lightworks hahahaha lulz.

Finally making the rounds now that I have some down time. I hope you feel better now!

And I love your BSG vid very very much. Will definitely be referencing it a lot if I ever try a vid heavy on the overlays, because you executed it beautifully.
