Vidlet Project Crazy Notions: vote?
Oct. 3rd, 2008 07:35 pmSo, I've sent my seventh vidlet off for betaing which means it's time to start thinking about my next one. The challenge is 'microscopic', which I'm having a rough time with. I don't want to do it about the unborn flipper baby because
kiki_miserychic already did that and did it really well. So, my main idea is doing a final four video, like, the difference between the final four and everyone else is microscopic, but everyone thinks it's so big.
HOWEVER, it's proving really difficult to find a song I'm excited about doing for them, let alone one I can also cut down reasonably easily.
So far my options are:
1) God Shuffled His Feet by the Crash Test Dummies. I love the idea of doing this one because it has lines like, "and if your eye gets poked out in this life, will it be waiting up in heaven with your wife?" and other such lolarity, but I'm a little fraught on lyric matching occasionally and I'm worried that it'll come across as 'quirky' but not really that great. Also I have a niggling notion it would work better as a full length vid post-series finale.
2) The Unforgiven Ones by the Crash Test Dummies (why yes, they seem to be popular this evening). This is much more sombre and would be a look at the FF as the 'unforgiven ones', unforgiven for what they are/have done to both species. Problem is I can't bear to cut it down. It makes me want to do a full-length vid about them. Which is something many other people have done and I'm not sure I wouldn't just end up editing it rather blandly. AND YET, the lyrics are interesting. AND YET, I'm not sure I want a full-length vid in my vidlet project.
3) Attempt to somehow cut down "I want to be Evil," by Eartha Kitt as a Tory vidlet. Because SPORFLE. Or possibly as a general FF vidlet because "I'm noted most for my unspoiled gender," where gender=cylonicity = win. But despite being in love with the hilarious premise I have severe doubts about whether I could cut the song down to size because I would need some of the minute-long intro to frame it, but not all of it and it's too long. :/ Plus on numerous repeats the lyrics aren't getting easier to visualise as they usually do.
4) Be brave, use an instrumental and build your own damn story, girl. Probably that Jump, Little Children intro that you love (even though you hate the rest of the song).
5) THE BOSS! Radio Nowhere. To be honest this is a stupid choice because I'm stumped beyond, "Radio Nowhere! They were all listening to the radio!" but it's Bruce Springsteen, and one should never need an excuse to love the Boss.

Date: 2008-10-03 12:32 pm (UTC)Oooohhh. Which one?
Radio Nowhere
Oooooooohhhhhh. I have been wanting some kind of BSG vid--any kind! whatever!--to this song forever. It is silly that this doesn't exist.
I'm distracted by shiny ideas. What was the question?

Date: 2008-10-03 12:41 pm (UTC)And yes, Radio Nowhere is awesome but I'm not sure it's fair to cut it down for a vidlet that it doesn't really fit anyway. :/
The question, clearly, was since you're a vidder now, when are you going to make me a vid to Radio Nowhere? :p

Date: 2008-10-03 04:52 pm (UTC)in serious terms, I like the instrumental idea. but I don't know any of the other songs so I can't really speak to them.
will send you beta soon, but I'm swimming upstream over here...

Date: 2008-10-03 11:57 pm (UTC)Yeah it would hurt to cut Radio Nowhere. I've never had a specific idea for that song, other than schizophrenic BSG thoughts when it comes on, which is why I keep hoping someone else will just do it. 'Cause I'm not a vidder, I'm a fan who made a couple vids once. :)

Date: 2008-10-04 03:20 am (UTC)And to be fair, it wouldn't have crossed my mind either, except I have a folder of mp3s on my computer of songs I like and might like to vid/songs people have given me/songs people have given me for vids and every time I'm stuck for a vidding song I trawl through it which leads to some entertaining combinations. This one I got from

Date: 2008-10-04 03:22 am (UTC)Also since three of those songs would make better full-length vids anyway and since I have a vague idea to use the instrumental in another piece, perhaps they will all get made one day anyway.

Date: 2008-10-04 03:30 am (UTC)Actually my first thought was that I wouldn't be able to do it as some sort of "I wanna be just like you!" slashy thing. But...I may have just had an idea that's either insanity or genius. And I might be able to make it a vid about Tory wanting to be evil in season four and secretly justifying it because she's only doing what Laura was doing in seasons 1 - 3, rite?
I think what I'll do is try it. Because if it doesn't work, I can fall back on the instrumental piece and if it does work, it could be awesome, plus I would like to have another vidlet that's a little more comedic in tone (even if in a sort of dark, twisted kinda way). And if it does pan out, I may have an idea to use the instrumental for a final four vidlet for the projection challenge instead...maybe.
Anyway, don't worry about the time - I know you'll get to the beta once you have some. Good luck with the swimming upstream!

Date: 2008-10-04 03:38 am (UTC)I don't think I could bear to cut Radio Nowhere either. I don't have an entirely specific idea for it either so we're even, though maybe that'll change with the finale?
And I have news for you, I used to think I was just a fan who made a couple of vids once. In fact I thought that until I was a fan who'd made eight videos in like...two years. I didn't really give up fighting it until this spring and I still feel weird about the notion that I'm a 'vidder'.
You are a vidder, even if you don't vid again for a while. Plus a lot of my vids, at least, start off with random schizophrenic thoughts and only coalesce as planning progresses. If it helps, the feel I get from Radio Nowhere is that it's a gen vid about the whole shebang, and clips of everything, from everywhere, is probably the way to go. It's about the search for meaning and feeling and someone else at the other end of your wireless signal. It's perfect for the cylons and the humans and the final four.
DAMMIT, one of us HAS to make this vid!

Date: 2008-10-04 04:21 am (UTC)though maybe that'll change with the finale
Hee! While listening to Radio Nowhere on my commute home--because now I apparently only listen to songs I want to vid--I thought maybe it'd be something to do after the finale.
the feel I get from Radio Nowhere is that it's a gen vid about the whole shebang, and clips of everything, from everywhere
Also, word. Just, yes, completely. Which is actually why I've not yet attempted to sit down and think about it in any specific way. To be honest, my niche-y little character vids are something quite different than show-spanning gen meta vids, and I'm not sure the latter is in my repertoire at all. Which is also why I don't really call myself a "vidder." Yet, anyway. :) This song, it must be about The Whole Show. And the pacing is different than anything I've yet tried, so . . . and I'd totally need neat effects. . . so I'm sure eventually I'll feel like it's something I might be up to, once I get the brain dump of character vids out of my head. Unless you make it in the meantime. :D But this vid IS GOING TO GET MADE by someone.

Date: 2008-10-04 10:44 am (UTC)HEE, yet more evidence that you are a lost cause. VIDDER.
Which is actually why I've not yet attempted to sit down and think about it in any specific way. To be honest, my niche-y little character vids are something quite different than show-spanning gen meta vids, and I'm not sure the latter is in my repertoire at all.
You know, that's fascinating, because I was totally the opposite. I felt and still feel much more comfortable vidding something expansive, like, from the whole show, than focusing down on a single character. I think it's because the more material there is, the easier it is for me to lyric-link and I use that heavily in my initial planning phases. I find instrumental sections much harder. So yes, sometimes it's hard to make sure the whole thing is cohesive, but at the same time, the show itself sort of...provides the cohesion just by virtue of everyone watching knowing these are all clips from the same show.
So I find focusing down on one character a lot more limiting and intimidating.
Though I disagree with you about the need for neat effects. Perhaps it's just because I'm old and cranky and still refusing to use anything other than WMM unless I absolutely cannot a) make the effect in WMM via blood, sweat and tears or b) make the vid without the effect. I tend to think that effects are generally over rated.
I mean, I use them. But generally I think that the best effects are pretty simple ones, and complex ones are best used sparingly. Still, I'm hardly a veteran vidder myself so my opinions may change. Certainly I don't think Radio Nowhere desperately needs effects. But I do think it desperately needs the finale which is a shame since I love it so and we both want it vidded so badly!
If I'm inspired to do it after the finale, I'll check with you first to see what your plans for the song are! ;)

Date: 2008-10-04 04:40 pm (UTC)And that really is kind of fascinating. I need limitation in vidding at the moment. So it's not that I don't aspire to the vidder label, it's that I don't feel quite worthy of it. :D Cathedrals was originally supposed to be about like six people and all the early drafts drove me CRAZY because they just felt like pretty pictures set to music and not cohesive. And so when I cut it down to focus on three characters, my brain went, "omg LIMITATION! thank you!" and breathed a huge sigh of relief. Clips of everyone from everywhere? Totally freezes my brain. But something to work towards for sure.
I suspect that what I call effects may not actually be effects (the lingo, I do not know it) as much as they are just a set of more advanced editing skills than I currently have. The continually driving beat of Radio Nowhere would I think call for tighter jumps and cuts and shorter clips than I've yet forced myself to work with, and a little manipulation of timing might be cool, etc. I don't think I'll ever do much that's full of complex effects, but I do think I need more editing practice before I'd even think about trying this. Yay imaginary future vid! I make vids I want to watch, so if you made it and I could just watch it? That'd be awesome too. :D

Date: 2008-10-04 05:04 pm (UTC)I do understand your feeling of not being 'worthy' of the title. I still don't really feel 'worthy' of it, but I'm getting closer to accepting that that's just me being daft and that if I spend this much time doing it it's time to just bite the bullet and call myself a vidder.
Also, I know none of the lingo either. Well, not so much of it. I'm completely self-taught (like most vidders I suspect), and have only very, very recently - as in the last few months - begun to socialise with other vidders and discuss vidding with other vidders. And even then not many. So like you, I'm stuck with what words to use. But I do know what you mean about effects vs effects there.
If it helps your confidence, once I realised I needed to make a vid with quick jump cuts, I just...tried it and found it wasn't as terrifying as I thought it would be. It was just a fiddly matter of fiddling until it sounded and looked right. The same with most other effects I've ever wanted. You'll just slowly find yourself becoming more comfortable with more intricate work.
And I shall continue to consider you a vidder because someone out there ought to if you won't, because you'll always feel that someone/most other people are far better than you! And I can't wait to see what you come up with next!
Since neither of us will likely be vidding it until after the finale, I guess you have time to practice and I have time to think on it?
