Because clearly, ten just wasn't enough, here is the first of two planned bonus vidlets to round out my [livejournal.com profile] thearchive2 project to a Cylonic dozen. The next one will be for the actual bonus challenge (crossover) but this one is Mod's Choice, and the Mod chose a remix.

Title: Sunday Bloody Sunday: Mambo Remix
Video: Battlestar Galactica (2003)
Audio: Sunday Bloody Sunday - Richard Cheese
Summary: Remix of [livejournal.com profile] tallulah71's vid Sunday Bloody Sunday. Humans and Cylons. Are you ready to learn how to mambo?
Editor's Notes: This was [livejournal.com profile] cyborganize's crazed, genius brainchild, but man was it fun to make. MAMBO! I'd also like to thank [livejournal.com profile] tallulah71 for permission to remix her vid, and thoroughly recommend you go watch the original if you haven't seen it. Hell, if you have, go watch it again.

Richard Cheese makes me laugh at the most inappropriate things...

He's a freaking genius.

I didn't even know about him until [livejournal.com profile] cyborganize suggested this song! But yes, it's hilarious and it has no right to be... XD

I actually have the album "Lounge Against the Machine" (which, HEE!), and it's pretty funny. A lot of the hip hop songs don't really have words you process when you hear them...but when it's done in swing, it's just so much funnier.

HEE! Oh that was great Becca! This is my favorite vidlet (I'm a sucker for anyone dancing or faux-dancing).

I especially liked how you transitioned from Colonial Day to the shot of Kara and Six fighting like it was some new dance move. Really great.

Although given the mambo theme, it's sort of eerily appropriate. :)

Oh they fixed it now. That is my icon (Lafayette of True Blood, dancing)!

Before I had some weird black and white image of a screen with a bunch of holes in it and a woman behind it that said Find Me.
I've never before had an icon switcharoo. Interesting.

I'm so glad you like it! And especially glad you like the faux-dancing! (And I'm sekritly totally in love with that "dance" bit too.)

Wow. This was really skillful. You really made a lot of the lines of the song work in this wonderfully insane way. I was hysterically laughing and horrified (at the imagery, not your vidding) at every turn. I especially liked the way you used the Lee-Boomer gun moment and the way you juxtaposed the Boomer-Caprica alliance and then betrayal. The juxtaposition of Athena about to be raped and Gina's arm reaching for the food was absolutely chilling. Also, this vid has an impressive understanding of the complex rhythm of the song. Great, great vid.

I've never heard that version of the U2 song. What a cracked-out version. :)

Thank you! I'm especially glad the timing works in terms of the rhythm of the thing because there were a few problematic sections that I cam this close to just giving up on and living with but in subsequent redrafts I managed to get them pretty up to shape, I think.

I'm also glad that the horrified-laughter element came through strongly.

And that you noticed the rape-sequence. It's kind of sick, but one of my earliest ideas for this remix that wasn't so existent in the original was to have a massive mess of all the human/cylon sex-stuff leading up to those shots of Athena and Gina. So I'm kind of glad the response is good-chilling now, "WTF were you thinking you freak!" ;)

I'd never heard the song either until [livejournal.com profile] cyborganize told me about it, but I may now have to get a whole album by this guy...

Um I really like your brain a lot. This idea is frakking insane and frakking brilliant but oh the editing!!! The sequence from about :10 to :18 with the different fights as dance moves was AMAZING. The connections you made between all the clips were pretty sweet, but Gina holding the gun on Cain to Caprica getting shot, Eights shooting and getting shot, Tigh reaching back to hit Boomer and then Chief getting smacked, and Sharon's arms getting stretched out over the bed to Gina reaching for food were little bits of editing GLEE that made me squee a little at your brilliance. Also the whole overarching idea of Cylons v. Humans as a mambo makes me giggle uncontrollably.

XD I'm so glad you like the 10 - 18 section. One of the earliest ideas for this vidlet was to make it a dance vid, and while I'm not sure I succeeded on a vid-wide level, that's one section where I think it kind of does. It's also the section that went through the most redrafts so it's very gratifying to know it was worth it.

As to the rest, while my brain appreciates the compliment and while I did do the editing and storyboarding legwork on this, my brain must share credit with [livejournal.com profile] cyborganize whose insane idea this was originally (the mix of music/remix/themes), and [livejournal.com profile] tallulah71 was actually the one who used all those cause/effect disconnects in her original vid. There are quite a lot of homages/clips taken from the original and recontextualised here.

Not all of the cause/effect stuff is the same as the ones that she uses, but the very, very awesome Gina/Cain/Caprica shootout, Eights/Cally/Helo and Tigh/Athena/Tyrol were all iconic moments from the original I recut into this one. (ETA: that makes it sound like I literally lifted them from the original vid; what I meant is, I recut similar sequences from the source material).

REMIXES FTW! :D

Oooh I love this! It really reminds me of the opening Jitterbug scene in Mulholland Drive, where the joyousness becomes this oppressive fantasy that cannot be sustained and so instead reflects on the desperation of the subject(s).

also... Gaius as Richard Cheese makes me giggle. So appropriate.

Thank you! :D

You know, I only ever watched Mulholland Drive once. I was about sixteen and it confused the everliving hell out of me, but dude, the feeling of that film will stick with me forever. I don't actually remember the scene you're talking about, but it sounds like an awesome compliment and I'm going to go off and YouTube it. :D

OMG I KNOW! XD

(P.S. your icon is awesome.)

I'm not sure that the Jitterbug scene does that as a scene all by itself, rather the footage following the scene of the woman twisting in her bedsheets and the narrative as a whole change the context of the opening scene. Anyway, I watched on YouTube and I don't think it conveys the apprehension I felt in the theatre watching a JITTERBUG. Maybe it's only a big-screen film like Lynch says *shrug* but /film wanking - the point about your vidlet stands :D

(even though she's technically dancing to Chamillionaire, the "one-minute" part makes me think Liz Lemon was waiting for the right vidlet :)

I love all the baggage that the song comes with from the original vid. It's like a cover of a vid the same way there are covers of songs, which is an extremely cool concept.

I love Richard Cheese's music. He's almost made for vidding hilarity.

Gaeta and everyone looks ridic dancing, which is awesome. I love how you edit everything like a bizzare dance, even the ships. I love how everyone shoots everyone.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it as a "cover vid"; that's an awesome way to describe it. I'm not deeply involved in the fandom but I know that remixing fic is something that's an actual like "thing" now, but I've never actually seen another remix vid (though I'm sure some exist). I think because you really need to use not only a cover of the song but a cover in a different style or it's just another vid to the same song? Which makes it more difficult.

And dude. Richard Cheese is like, my new love. He's awesome.

I love that you noticed all that. Thank you! :)

In vidding, I think remixing is when you take a vid that you made to a song already and putting a different song over top. [livejournal.com profile] greensilver's Ghost Song Isn't Crying is a remix of Ghost Song. Some people call it a mashup too. I love that we pillage other areas and cultures for our terms.

The way that Richard Cheese covered U2 is the way that you covered [livejournal.com profile] tallulah71, which I find very interesting. There was at least one other cover vid that I remember, but I can't think of the who, what, when, or where.

LOL I can't believe I made you do a remix bid without knowing what one is! whoops. there was a whole remix challenge at vvc, I think in 2007. I'll find you some links later on. typically a remix bid takes up similar themes but uses a different song - the cover was just serendipitous.

and yes, mashups are sort of a joke thing where you just swap in different audio. they can be amaaaaaaaazing.

There's some of the VVC remix challenge listed on the vid database.

I'm awful with using the right terms for things.

Doing a remix vid without knowing what it is makes it even better. :)
