HELLO I'M ON DREAMWIDTH NOW.
Dec. 14th, 2012 05:05 pmOkay, so,
chaila finally bugged me enough to set up my dreamwidth properly rather than just name squatting. So I'm going to experiment with using it.
Firstly, I have no intention of leaving LJ. I'm going to be automatically cross-posting everything. I've imported my entire LJ to DW, including my flist and permissions, so all your livejournal usernames should have access to my dreamwidth account via OpenID so you should be able to access my flocked stuff on DW too if you're so inclined (though since I'll be crossposting, that probably won't matter unless you want to read the comments).
I've looked for everyone on my flist on dreamwidth under your current names (or obvious/known variations thereof), and if I've found you, even if you're just namesquatting too, I've added you and granted you access.
If you seem to be using your dreamwidth primarily/crossposting everything and you're already subscribed/granted access to my dreamwidth, I am now only reading your dreamwidth via my flist. But for the vast majority of you (i.e. those of you not using dreamwidth actively, or those of you who have not yet granted me reciprocal access), I am reading your LJ posts via my DW flist. Yeah, I'll get a few of your posts twice, but I'll sort that out as we go and as I get used to who's posting where. I'd rather not risk missing flocked content.
ETA: Hmm, seems like clicking "subscribe" on my LJ friends in my circle doesn't, in fact, make their entries show up on my reading list, so balls. That's okay, though, I'll just read both my flists. Or...do dw users have any tips on this?
SO.
WITH ALL THAT SAID -
Have I missed any of you? Do any of you have dreamwidth names that are very different from your livejournal names? (Not you,
futuransky, I know all about you!)
Also, what communities should I subscribe to? So far, I pretty much just have
vidding and
vidukon_cardiff...
I miss all my pretty icons though...
(Also, lol, because I have a free account, I have a tag limit of 1000 tags. WELL YOU'VE ALL SEEN MY LJ TAG LIST. I got the following, wonderful, error message:
"Error updating journal: Tags error: Adding this tag would exceed your maximum of 1000 tags. Please remove at least 794 of the following new tags: "
So you know, 1) I was using tags when tumblr was a gleam in its coders' eyes and 2) OH GOD I JUST GUTTED MY TAG SYSTEM IT'S USELESS NOW, thank god it's all still there on LJ....)

Date: 2012-12-14 08:34 pm (UTC)Yay so good to see you here :D
Subscribing doesn't make LJ entries show up here, no. The way I've been
stalkingfollowing you is by making a feed. If they flock their stuff that won't do you any good tho.To find new people I tend to go for the interests/site search and find people posting about awesome stuff, and also just scouting other people's profiles/circle is a good way to go. Pretty recent and active friending meme here.
Some users I'd suggest are coffeeandink, genusshrike, and selenak, plus you should totes go play at

Date: 2012-12-15 01:58 am (UTC)I think you actually have to create a feed to follow your LJ friends here. i.e. I have been following you via your very own feed! (Though now I won't have to!) It's pretty easy to make one though, which is probably what I will do once I get around to it. I haven't done it yet, b/c I've just been reading in both places. And I don't think feeds work for friends-locked posts? But still, more and more it's just. . . depressing to go to LJ, and have my posts be like the only ones. So. If you find an easier way, do let me know!
Comms! Um,
*elegy for your tags*

Date: 2012-12-15 09:37 am (UTC)I think I'll have to read both feeds for now, some of the few people active on my flist only flock, so I don't want to not be reading that, but yeah, it's good to know there are at least some options there.
And thanks fro the recs on what to follow. OBVIOUSLY
(Oh god, my tags, that's one reason why even if I move here permanently I'm considering keeping my LJ as paid instead of here so that I can maintain that insane system and keep on autocrossposting and stuff because it crossposts your tags over too and I need to be able to find my stuff and believe it or not, my tag system actually works for me. Like, I can use it to find pretty much anything I can remember posting. It's just for everyone ELSE that it's a tangled mess of impossible-to-understand...)

Date: 2012-12-15 03:20 pm (UTC)Unless you're really hardcore and willing to miss flocked content, there's no real getting around having to read two flists, but I do not find this to be the inconvenience that people assume it will be. I do try to move whatever I can without loosing content over to DW, though, so if you're going to be crossposting everything, I shall move you off my default filter on LJ. Slowly but surely my DW is becoming more substantial than my LJ!
The feeds trick is a nice one, though, and worth keeping in mind. I use it primarily for comms that 1) don't have locked content 2) consist primarily of short posts linking other places (because the RSS feed doesn't recognize cuts).
I think more than on LJ, the action is on journals rather than comms. I gather there are a few fandoms with fully active comms, but for the most part you're not gonna overload your reading list by subscribing to everything. When I'm looking for more to read, I usually hit up the "network" button (friends of friends).

Date: 2012-12-15 08:48 pm (UTC)Yeah, I don't want to miss flocked content, but my flist is slow enough that I don't think I'll have much of a problem checking two. Also - interesting - I didn't know about the network button at all, thanks! I mean, I knew about friends-of-friends on LJ, though I never really used it, I may have to take a look at this though.
And yes, I will be crossposting everything so it's safe to move me from that filter.
It's nice to be here!

Date: 2012-12-16 03:48 am (UTC)Here is some code you can put into the custom CSS box to keep feed entries from taking over your rlist. It doesn't make them respect cuts, but it limits the size of each feed entry, so if it's longer than the specified size, it appears with its own separate scrollbar. If that makes sense?

Date: 2013-01-05 09:37 pm (UTC)Thanks, I'd been trying to find that code! I'd actually heard of it before and used it for a short while before deciding the way it would "catch" your scrolling and suddenly you'd be scrolling through the box instead of the page was too annoying to deal with.
But then I lost track of where I'd seen it and regretted it because it does seem like a useful thing to have on hand.
