So, I'm a huge Star Wars geek, and I've been meaning, for a while now, to make a semi-serious meta post about the various ways you can read Star Wars and its extended universe, either as a modern text or as a myth - how the expectations differ and how, for me, the two culminate in the glorious death of Ganner Rhysode.

However, all of that has taken back seat to this picture. It's the cover of "Sacrifice," the next-but-one novel release in the Legacy of the Force series of novels. This is Mara Jade Skywalker. All you need to know is, she's cooler than you. Also, she's 58. Yes folks, she is supposed to be fifty eight.

*headdesk*

It wouldn't be so ridiculous if EVERYONE got this treatment. But no, other people, while not looking quite the right age, at least look like they could be placed within the adjacent decade. They have stuff like, say, grey hair. Or, you know, crow's feet.

Well, um, she's a good guy/gal, right? Look what turning evil did for Palpatine? So, maybe, the force can make people look younger than their years? Why not? If Lucas can change history and make Greedo shoot first...NOT THAT I'M BITTER.

HAN SHOT FIRST! Me and my boy bought them on DVD when they came out and watched them all back to back (with pizza and ice cream - great day!) and discovered the wonderful phenomenon of Bastard!Solo. Seriously, we love him, but the number of times in the first two films that he's an utter bastard is brilliant. Honestly, next time you watch A New Hope, interpret anything Han does through the "Bastard!Solo" glasses and the film hikes considerably in quality (and considering where it starts, that's a whole lot of quality.)

Re: youthfulness. Before all the prequels I just assumed that using the Force let you live a long time.

And yeah, in the extended universe due to advanced medical technology, etc., people do have slightly longer lifespans and there's evidence (Alec Guiness in A New Hope being **57** aside) that the Force does extend your life span. But that doesn't side step the issue that EVERYONE ELSE INCLUDING LUKE does age on these book covers...NOT THAT I'M BITTER. ;)

The back cover of this book has a picture of Luke looking like he's been, like, hit by the age-train or something. Either that or he's been cloned and cross-bred with the Emperor's eye-bags. *shudder*
