BSG: Daybreak Motivational Posters

Okay so this week I've been totally without work which is irritating since I went through such angst to clarify my damn hours (I'm supposed to have three days a week), but they're shifting me between projects and the new one was supposed to be kicking off Wednesday except apparently not so I'm stuck with no work 'til Monday. Which isn't exactly horrific except I'm broke and could have done with the cash and am now in a weird interim am-I-on-the-dole-or-aren't-I? situation. But whatever...y'all aren't exactly interested in that.
What y'all are probably interested in is the fact that, driven by boredom, and the inability of my mind to quite comprehend the hilarious fail of the post-Earthfall Daybreak stuff, I have responded in the only sane way I can think of.

Yay!
Honestly I feel a little mean about the Leetopia one and the Agriculture one because everyone seems to agree that Farmer!Gaius was the most moving thing in the episode, and I'm one of three people on the internet who really didn't see Lee's ending as a total tragedy. I mean, the part where he got far more idealistic than smart and threw everything INTO THE SUN was a tragedy, sure. But look at him in that field! He's so happy! And kind of...free. Looking forward. Sure it would have been nice if that had happened with a metaphorical moving away from Kara and his Dad rather than them turning into invisible pigeons and necrophiliac hermits, but whatever, I WANTED TO HUGGLE HIM.
Ahem.

Date: 2009-04-02 03:39 pm (UTC)It's an entertaining idea, but actually, I'm not even including the RDM cameo. I'm literally talking about the last shot of robots to Watchtower culminating in Head!Six and Head!Baltar from behind, so it's not even clear it's them, walking down the street. It's supposed to be a little...obviously our world, but more oblique.
It's hard to explain the reasoning behind this without the context of what I've done, since I'm like, totally cutting pretty much all of Daybreak and I'm specifically NOT going down the "They all land on prehistoric Earth!" root (at least not explicitly; what they do do is subject to its own weird little inexplicable montage that will hopefully not just confuse the frak out of everyone.)
But anyway, I have a...possible solution to my problem in a very weird movie I'm looking into that may offer me the footage I need. We'll see...

Date: 2009-04-03 07:59 am (UTC)Unfortunately my current impulse is to name is FAT BABY NICKY Productions. I should probably work on that. Also: ICON LOVE.

Date: 2009-04-02 10:25 pm (UTC)I am a little disappointed that there isn't an Agathons-related one. Much as I adore the characters, I think the Athena killing Boomer than and the Hera as Mitochondrial Eve thing are both RIPE for skewering.

Date: 2009-04-03 08:02 am (UTC)I dunno, I did try to think of a way to macro that but I guess I didn't because, honestly, Hera as mitochondrial Eve I kind of liked even if it was a scifi cliche and a stupid reason to ditch all the tech. I suppose really, though, having Helo and Athena discussing setting her up with a Nice Local Boy could have been entertaining... :p

Date: 2009-04-02 10:38 pm (UTC)Secondly, re: scary robotz, you should TOTALLY pull footage from TSCC! Like the robot with a face that Cameron sees, and the chess playing ones, and John Henry! XOVER FTW.

Date: 2009-04-03 08:03 am (UTC)I don't know, I kind of want to include, like, real chess playing robots and stuff but I'm worried flat out stealing TSCC footage will pull people out of the moment?

Date: 2009-04-03 12:03 am (UTC)I'm laughing, but why do I feel like crying? ;)
Oh NICKY. :( Saaam!
I do like to imagine Lee got his happy-ish ending eventually.
If I forget that he killed Nicky and Sam!!I do think that's what they were going for; it just came off really weird for him to be happy at that moment. Like so much else in the finale. *sigh* I really think this is our fandom's Breaking Dawn. :Pno subject

Too true.

O_o
OMG! They failed at something else!
no subject
Date: 2009-04-03 08:14 am (UTC)AND OMG I KNOW. I totally didn't get it for a while, same as it took me a while to realise Nicky was gonna DIE, but after a day or two I was like...hang on a minute, they totally just shot the disabled guy into the sun because obviously requiring technology to survive is NO LIFE AT ALL. *facepalm*
It's like freaking discrimination bingo! I'm trying to see if I can find some classism in there to round out the sexism, racism, colonialism and disability discrimination... o_O

Date: 2009-04-03 01:04 am (UTC)THIS, lady. This.
And your macros are awesome as always.
Final scene... honestly it just bugs me that robots/technology was the sole focus of danger and oh noes. It might've been more worthwhile to get some footage in there of, you know, WAR and stuff. Not that it would make it any less cutesy and didactic, but at least it'd be didactic about the right thing.
I fully support you still ending it with the headpeople in New York, by the way.

Date: 2009-04-03 08:28 am (UTC)I think that what bugs me is the fact that the entire discussion on technology was OH NOES which is why I didn't hate the dancing robots entirely because they're really not that threatening and to me are an expression of our curiosity and innovation, but I concede this was entirely likely not the point of the montage.
What I actually want to do is like...a montage of us and technology. Good and bad. Cus that's what I think I hated most about the finale - the luddite "technology is not the answer," message, echoed even by Cylon about themselves. The simplistic nonsense of it. And the fact that so many people in the wilds of the internet buy this nonsense. Like some common sense stupid aphorism like, "computer games cause gun crime." And then it gets raised up and lauded as deep and daring when actually, no. It's become the cliche that (back when it had Starbuck torturing Leoben and Gina on Pegasus and Tigh ordering suicide bombings) it used to eschew.
And...sorry, now I'm ranting again.
But anyway, yes, I do still end it on the Head People. Kinda. Although I'm making efforts to lessen the smug factor (THANKS, RDM!CAMEO!) and make it a little more oblique. They're there though, and it's NYC.

you might be able to find some footage of scary military robots in the Prelinger archive? not so much contemporary stuff probably but there are some futurist gems. I'm curious what the movie is...

Date: 2009-05-09 01:29 am (UTC)I have a favor to ask!
I am doing a panel on disability in BSG at WisCon. I wonder, could I borrow your macros on dialysis and disability discrimination--either the macros themselves, or the ideas--with credit, for the panel? I'm not sure if they would go over well or not but oh they would be so funny to have up my sleeve.
If you'd rather not, it's OK to say no, or just ignore this comment. :)
no subject
Date: 2009-05-09 09:26 am (UTC)That panel sounds really insteresting. Can I ask what topics you intend to discuss? I imagine there'll be quite a lot about Gaeta and Anders? Nicky and Tigh are obviously also candidates although Nicky's renal failure is totally forgotten an episode later and after the start of season three, Tigh's disability is likewise never really portrayed in any meaningful fashion or mentioned again. He just wears an eyepatch now.
I'm trying to think of other disabled characters, but I'm drawing a blank. *thinks*
